Default Software Discussion

This will be where we discuss all of the software we use with music production, including:
DAW's/trackers/etc
Software synths
VST effects plug-ins
Recording software
DJ'ing software
Notation software
Mario Paint Composer
Whatever else

The purpose of this thread is to generate discussion about the programs, how you use them, why you use them, why you should or shouldn't use them, or anything else that comes to mind (questions, tips, tricks, etc). This isn't a "I use this program cause it's better than that program" thread. That kind of talk will not be tolerated.

Hello folks:

Nexus continues to grow in popularity here in MP, and with that, I thought I'd pass along the latest release from ReFX and Vengeance Sound: Nexus2.

reFX - NEXUS 2.0 - What's new?

Some nifty changes, but I REFUSE to pay $400.00 CDN for an upgrade (and that's supposedly with $270.00 knocked off as an original Nexus user). What's worse ... Nexus2 users now have to use a dongle.

Ugh, gross. I'll take NI Massive please, thanks!

Call it trolling, flaming, shameless post-whoring, but out of passion and love, I too am here to say:

UP YOURS REFX

its completely called for. I find it absolutely abusive that not only do they up the standalone price to 400 USD, they do not even include the dongle. This while there are INCREDIBLE VST's from NI that cost half the price and do not require a dongle.

Im gonna start handing out Nexus DVD's at work, just out of spite.

LMMS is Linux Multimedia Studio...basically a FL Studio-alike. It's pretty impressive, considering it's youth (this is an alpha 0.4.0 version) and very easy to transition to if you've ever used Fruity. They recently started converting it to Qt, which makes it portable, but I didn't know it was already this far in being ported to Windows. VST support is in on Linux, but it's not enabled on Windows yet, which is kind of funny. Give it a shot. It comes with a whole lot of submitted example songs, many of which are pretty crappy. I wanna submit some hot shit just to up the level of expectation.

go get cakwalk's rapture

6 individual oscillators (free running) with 3, 6, and 9, multi voice settings each for an effective 56 voice output. with single eq'ing, filter chain, and filter banks for each of the 6 osc's and 2 global filter banks you can get a rediculous amount of fidelity out of this. add wavetabling to that and you have a beast for pads. the presets it comes with are pretty ehh so I would not suggest this to someone who isn't accustomed to getting heir hands dirty. also it seems more focused towards high end sound but you can still get fat bass out of it if you tweak it right. my favorite =)

Does anyone else use Garageband? lol. Maybe I'm the odd man out.

I'm currently taking a class on Ableton Live Studio. I'm slowly shifting over to that program. It's amazing what you can do. From basic editing to a full out performance. Hot stuff.

I'm considering Live, just for the live performance aspects...I just need to get the demo and play with it, I guess. Maybe it'll save me the trouble of getting a loop pedal.

i use tracker software.

i've been using Renoise for a really long time. excellent effects built in, not bad for mixing, awesome sampler and sample control, pretty much everything can be fine tuned to a t.

it also supports re-wire and shit too.

totally free!

renoise is amazing and i have been using it for absolutely everything lately. the fact that i can twist samples around in whatever way i want has totally changed the way i write music (for instance, nearly all of the percussion i use now comes from field recordings i make with my minidisc).

i do find the pattern-based thinking a bit difficult to work with when it comes to arranging a whole song, though (i'm used to being able to visually see the structure of a whole track i.e. with a standard DAW). how do you work with that?

I do most of my stuff with hardware. That said, I use Rosegarden and Ardour in Linux. I am trying to get started with Qtractor, but it is rather confusing.
