im not feelin this synclavier at all. mainly because it sounds like something from the 80's (when it was used) step up to some new era soft synths / hardware

The synclavier was the sampler/synthesizer/sequencer that New England Digital released in 1979. It was called the "tapless studio" because of one's ability to compose an entire track solely on it. The synclavier is one of the most famous FM synthesizers around, and it rivaled the Fairlight CMI.

Janet Jackson used the synclavier on her albums "Control" and "Rhythm Nation 1814." Even some sound effects used in "All For You" and "Discipline" are because of the synclavier.

Michael Jackson used the synclavier on almost all of his albums. Most of the sound effects on the "Bad" album were synclavier generated. Some sound effects on "Morphine." Heck, about half of "Thriller" was synclavier. The famous footstep sound effects, the howling, the door slamming, etc. in "Thriller" were synclavier generated. The most famous use is on "Beat It." The gong introduction at the beginning of "Beat It" comes courtesy of the synclavier (it's a default synth).

There is my brief history thing, statement thing, on the synclavier.

Personally, I like the 80s sound, and I wish all mainstream music nowadays would sound like those trademark songs. So many popular songs, and artists, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Duran Duran, Human League, Dead or Alive (Pete Burns scares me), so much variety...

second point: you may like the old sound, but imo it just isnt feasible anymore to use anything that old, the sound is inferior by all standards. you can get old school sounds from new synths and it will sound much better simply because of the quality

I couldn't agree more. You can still get the retro 80's synth feel from Reason and FL, without sacrificing sound quality. I would honestly suggest either getting Reason or a newer version of FL. From there you could transfer all of your sheet music and start building some new songs.

Also, it takes a long time to get good, regardless of what you are using. I've been working long and hard with Reason for about a year and a half now (not to mention some older shitty programs prior to that) and I'm still nowhere near the skill level of most of the artists here on bemanistyle. You have to approach these things with patience.

I didn't post it for lessons, or to be disrespectful, I posted it because I felt like it (stupid reason), and I felt like posting that piece of history somewhere (along with my opinion)

You're pretty good for only 1 1/2 years of practice with Reason. Still baffles me. xP

You really think so? I'll listen to other stuff and get frustrated (quite often) because of how lame my stuff sounds in comparison.

either way, the point is Tetris, you're only as good as the tools you surround yourself with, and the tools are only as good as you are at using them. Get an affordable, yet quality DAW, and practice, practice, practice! If you're going to be using equipment that sounds sub-par, then your results will be sub-par. I think the overall consensus is that using synclaiver will only give you sub-par results.

General consensus of this thread:

Use FL Studio or Reason

Don't use Synclavier

unless you start finding more creative ways of using the synclavier, I'd just recommend not posting the songs that use them here. By all means, if you like it, keep using it, because that's what makes you unique. It's just right now, you're not using your full potential with it and the songs are boring because they're repetitive. Spend some time with your songs, listen to them over and over and over again, listen to other similar songs and try to notice what kind of changes they make, and what little quirks make them neat, and try to do that with your songs. If you find yourself getting bored with the song you're doing, save it and come back to it later, a fresh idea might spark in your mind after having some time away from it. Just be yourself and let the creative energy flow.

But anyway, this thread is going nowhere after this. Locked.
