Dell laptops aren't that bad of a deal if you find a decent promotion. Or if they are coming out with a new model usually the previous will sell for hella cheap.
I'd have to disagree with the dell sucks/explosions part. I think they are decent if you find the right promotions.
Sony sucks in the sense that they are expensive and their parts are all proprietary.

I think that I can skimp on the ram a bit at first, is it easy to access the ram slots on a Toshiba? I've only used a mac and a Compaq, the compaq which theres a panel on the bottom with a picture of a ram stick XD, will it be easy to open and put ram in?
I should know this >.> but laptop ram IS differnt than desktop ram, correct? i'm aware of the differences between DDR, ect. but i've never put ram into a laptop. Just asking for pricing reasons.
Does anyone else have any experience with Toshiba laptops? Its good to have reassurance on large purchases.
<edit>I am now aware that the title of the topic is "Lapop" XD this is because of my keys on the compaq laptop that i have, and is a perfect example of WHY I can't use this thing for school >.> http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...HO&coid=-30598
me likey blue D: | 1) Doesn't matter if you go through Best Buy or manufacturer... your RAM is going to limit you more than your processor 90% of the time. If you get a dual core, each running at 2 GHz, that'll be plenty.
2) RAM is pretty easy to install, but it's pricy. So to go from 512 to 2 GB RAM, you're talking somewhere in the realm of $260, since you'd have to replace each of the 256's with a 1 GB.
3) I work for Best Buy. And if I was just trying to get you to spend money, I'd be pointing you towards a Vaio (which sucks). I've had plenty of hands-on experience with each of the following brands: Apple, Toshiba, Gateway, Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony, and Averatech. Alienware... well, I don't want to spend the money to find out. Toshiba's got the best laptops at the moment. And yes, there are back to school sales going on. Quote: |

| This is very true, although you forgot to mention the part where the parts also tend to break under less force than other brands.
Let's put things this way: I have an open budget. I could get just about any laptop I wanted to for college. And I'm getting a Toshiba. A big honkin' 17" Toshiba with a dual-core AMD processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 120 GB hard drive. For under $1500. From Apple, for the same price, I'm seeing this:
13.3-inch widescreen display
1280 x 800 resolution
2.0GHz Intel Core Duo
512MB memory (2x256MB SODIMMs)
80GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive
SuperDrive (DVD±RW, CD-RW)
YAWN.

btw they come with wireless A i hear 8U | This man is lieing to you and speaking the truth all at the same time.
The ThinkPad is great, but dont dis the Lenovo Thinkpad, I have an R Series from when they were being manufactured by Lenovo and sold by IBM (you know, that whole bullshit) and its a fantastic machine. I love my Thinkpad, its durable as hell, its got nice battery life, tech support is amazing, and it even does games decently for a 32 meg graphics card.
Thinkpads do not come with Wireless A, but DVD/CDRW is standard now, and Wireless A is a 30 dollar option. | |

Dell uses Sony batteries | I think you've missed my point, which I have made in multible posts D: They're still to freakin' expensive. Thats like saying that the laptop will shoot fireworks out everytime I open it. Its moot. I never asked for fireworks, nor a battery that explodes.
I WAS at Best Buy yesterday, and I did see a laptop that REALLY caught my eye, it was an HP Pavilion, and it had everything I was looking for, except it had 1 gig of ram, instead of 2. something I can easily remedy :3 If I get THAT desperate, I know a friend who's dad owns a small buisness dealing with plastics and shit, i'll make a replacement shell for the screen XD

I would personally think about getting an intel-mac laptop and throw parallels on there. I really hate the keyboard that they're using in it right now though :<
