Which is a real bullshit reason, as, you know, theyre doing such a better job as compared to IBM.

More intelegent system design, more intelegent battery placement, correct placement of power connector (which apple cant do for some reason)

I dont know why people hate chinese companies

Let's put things this way: I have an open budget. I could get just about any laptop I wanted to for college. And I'm getting a Toshiba. A big honkin' 17" Toshiba with a dual-core AMD processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 120 GB hard drive. For under $1500.
And what's the video card?

That's what's pissing me off about all these sites. They offer these "great deals" on laptops but they fail to mention they are severely lacking in either, ram, harddrive, or video card. Wow you have a badass processor paired off with 256mb of ram and a 128mb video card and a 40gb 5200 rpm harddrive. I'm sure your gaming experience will be great! Have fun running Age of Empires II with an acceptable framerate. (not directed to you personally)

I built the same computer on dell, alienware, and toshiba and they are all around $2000, within 150 dollars of each other.

To the thread starter, Seriously, if you don't want this laptop for gaming / desktop replacement, just get some cheap ass dell for 300 or something. Why do you need to spend 1k for limited power if you're not going to be doing anything but watching some DVDs and browsing websites?

On this whole laptop thing, I bought a Toshiba just today thanks to BMS's recommendations (I am using it right now), and it's got a nice clear screen and a decent processor. I added a gig of RAM for $90 and it came to about $1040($890 after rebates). I'll let you all know if things go crazy-go-nuts (which according to this thread they shouldn't).

I also cleared out all the spyware and junk packaged with it >.>

I have an Acer Aspire 3002 Lci.. and I am always on it... everywhere i go.. i bring it with me.. plus my laptop has never slowed down.. it is always running as fast as when i first bought it.. Plus they are inexpensive... sure the video card isnt up to usual standards.. but that is the only thing that is wrong with it..

I HIGHLY suggest an Apple MacBook. I've tried just about every laptop out in the market and I've never seen anything as good as a MacBook. If you're worried about compatibility, you shouldn't be. Run Parallels or boot into Windows on your MacBook and you can run both Mac OS X apps and Windows apps. Plus the MacBook is damn nice-looking.

Also, it's not that Apple's products are more expensive (actually, their Mac Pro is cheaper than an identical Dell model), it's that they don't offer cheaper models of their laptops. But who really wants a laptop that'll only last a year or so anyway?

Which is why you get a thinkpad. It will outlive you.

I like Thinkpads too. But I think they're called "Lenovo" or something now. Although the MacBooks are still the nicest I've seen.

In terms of laptops, avoid Dell as I've had tons of problems with my Inspiron 9100 and the recent battery recalls due to them catching fire doesn't exactly sound nice either.
