Default Blocking websites

Hi guys,

Someone please tell me that there is a way that I can redirect someone to another page when they go on a certain site. I'm really desperate. The problem is that a certain member of my family keeps using my computer (which I paid for with my own money) to download certain files from a certain P2P site.

***Mods, please don't lock this thread for discussion of illegal activities, I'm trying to stop it from happening, not promote it ***

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a way that I can redirect him to a web page on my PC, for example, whenever he tries to go onto these sites. I want to make it look like the site is down, or has been closed down, so that he'll just give up his evil ways, and not let my PC run all night when I'm trying to sleep.

If there is any question I've asked that needs answering, it's this one.

P.S. I use IE6 (I can download 7) and Mozilla Firefox 2, OS Win XP Pro.

Depending on what kind of firewall you have (if any at all) you can just bock the ports, and start logging out of windows every time you leave your PC (Windows+L).

You can do it really easy with the hosts file.

Open the hosts file which is in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC with notepad. Add a new entry to the bottom that says

Code:
127.0.0.1 website here
127.0.0.1 is the local IP address of your computer. Where it says website here enter the website. Such as www.google.com

I would actually add two entries for the site.

Code:
127.0.0.1 www.google.com
127.0.0.1 google.com
That way both www.google.com and google.com both point towards your computer. You would just enter both of the lines at the bottom of the file on their own lines.

You can also block it with your router. Somewhere in the settings you can block domain names, transfer protocols, and IP addresses. Well Netgear and Linksys routers have this feature.

OMG that kicks ass! That's great guys, thank you. I was just wondering though, using the method with the hosts file, is it possible to make a message appear when said person tries to get on these sites, such as a dialogue box or an image?

I'm really grateful guys, thanks for the help.

The only way to do is it to create a local web server on your computer using something like IIS and make a web page that says whatever you want it to say.

If I did that (not that I know how) would I need my PC on 24/7?

No, it wouldn't matter since he's only using your PC to access the site.

You could also use some type of internet filter.

such as this one. *Naomi freeware internet filter - Radiant Morning technologies*

it even has p2p blocking.

I looked into filtering programs, like they use at school, but then he'll know that I've blocked it somehow. How do I create a local web server on my PC?

You can use a web server package like LightTPD. After installation, visit http://localhost/ (equivalent to http://127.0.0.1) and change C:\lighttpd\htdocs\index.html to whatever you feel will compel the offender to give up. For something simple like this, you probably won't need to configure much.

[Edit]For safety, you may want to block port 80 from external access so your ISP won't find out. They won't have to know.

Ok, got it working fine, I made up a simple 'screw you' page for now. So how do I block port 80 then? What will happen if my ISP finds out?

Does LightTPD turn itself off when I log off, because I always have to turn it on in order for the page to come up.

When you log off (by which I assume you mean turn the computer off), pages can't be served. If you have a router and you didn't forward port 80 manually, it shouldn't be a problem.

To activate LightTPD on startup while keeping it under wraps, I recommend adding a registry entry. (Cue obligatory "edit the registry at your own risk" warning.) Open the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and add a string with the value "C:\lighttpd\sbin\start-lighttpd.bat" (with quotes). Hopefully he won't notice the command prompt.
