Anyway, I'm having a problem doing this. I'm not sure if there is some kind of certain hardware signature embedded into the BIOS or what, because when I try to do a fresh install of XP Pro on the system, I'm getting all kinds of errors. It's still showing the Compaq logo when the system is started too. Would flashing a new BIOS fix this? Or is there an easier way to fix this problem?
If not my next solution is just to buy a different motherboard and put all the parts on it. I'm not sure if a new board would work in the Compaq case though, so that'd mean getting a new case too.

xp pro sp1a worked just fine
anyway now it's not finding the integrated network card
it's an nvidia nforce version 65.7.4, which seems to be vista only, but it seems like there would be a workaround for xp. anybody have any ideas?

Or you can borrow Media, unlike previous versions of Windows, Vista media is universal, so if you know someone who bought a PC with vista, just use their disc.

I finally got the ethernet port working, so now I have internet. My next problem is Windows Update seems to not be working properly. I have no idea what is wrong. I also tried downloading Service Pack 2 separately, but it refuses to install. The copy of windows has been authenticated or whatever, so that can't be the problem. It just refuses to do any windows updates.
I also tried downloading IE8 and it refuses to install. It only has IE6 right now, maybe I'll try IE7 and see if I can get that to install and try windows update from there.

2. way to go, but guaranteed the new driver is killing off some packets. Your registry might be corrupt.

What do I do though, copy the image to the thumb drive or copy all the files from the image onto the drive? If all else fails I'll get a Vista disc off somebody.
I'm imagining upgrading to Vista will fix the problems I'm having right now since I'll be able to download the correct drivers.

Replace "Windows 7" with "Windows Vista" and follow the instructions except for the part where it wants you to compress the whole hard disk. You can skip that step.
