Default CD-RW drive on hp computer doesn't read data CDs, but can read CD-Rs and RWs

I'm getting ticked off that my computer cannot read data CDs, but it can read all CD-Rs and RWs. I'm using an onboard CD-writer on the hp pavilion xt963. When I put a data or audio CD in, it doesn't even read for a few seconds and it blinks orange rapidly, while the CDs that can be written can be recognized. This is really confusing me.

New drive.... GO!

EDIT: I could find out what the problem is properly and you could try to fix it, or spend around $25 on a new box that spins those shiny circle things and reads stuff of them.

Let's see what Cat88 says.

have you tried reinstalling drivers

also has it always done this, or did it only start doing it recently?

1. Fuck you.

2. Drivers? For an optical Drive? This isn't 1993.

3. The laser is probably dead, try replacing it with another drive temporarily to rule out any software issues.

you're right, it isn't 1993. it is almost 2009, and we have not yet figured out a way to make optical drives magically work on their own just by squinting at them you fucking retard

you are right in suggesting the laser might be dead, but reinstalling drivers is a way easier step to take than buying a new drive on the hopes that it will work

I've yet to install any software for any optical drive with the exception of the hd media player for my current bluray/hddvd drive.

you don't typically need to install drivers for optical drives because they do it automatically; it's still possible for those drivers to become corrupted

Its far more likely that the IDE controller's driver's are corrupted.

If it was a SATA CDROM it would be an easy answer.
