Default DVD burners....

How long does your DVD burner last? within 2 years I have already bought like 3 of them

My first one was an Apex Brand about 50 dollars, it died after about 50 burns
My second one was a Pioneer brand about 70 dollars, died after about 120 burns
My third one was an HP brand also about 70 dollars, died after about 200 burns

Do you guys experience problems where burners last only about 9 months to a year?

I kind of want a Plextor Sata DVD burner which goes for like 120 I think. But if its going to die within a year I don't know if its worth it. Do you guys have any good brands of DVD burners to recommend?

Two months ago my brother got a brand new Acer computer. It comes with some no-name third-rate DVD+R DL burner (ATAPI, whatever that means) that for some reason produces unusually poor DVDInfoPro PI/PO test results with high-grade media. The same discs test like they should in DVDInfoPro with Sony drives. I'm looking to replace the stock drive with a Lite-On or LG burner and move it to the second bay for faster disc copying.

My NEC drive has easily burned over 200 things and still works fine. It's about 3 years old now I think.

I try to avoid SONY drives like the plague since they are very picky with media and expensive like all other SONY junk. I've had several brands of media not work in my SONY CD-RW and I haven't bought from them since. That being said, I have an NEC DVD+/-RW that works excellent. I almost went for the SATA ones but when I made my purchase SATA was both expensive and experiencing issues. It seems like most of those problems have since been resolved. I'd say your best bets are Lite-On, NEC, or LG.

I don't recommend Sony at all either. Having owned 3 of them, I can safely say they are no better than the ones you've been buying. I currently own an Asus burner which has lasted me nearly 3 years. Perhaps that might be an option, assuming they still make burners of course.

I should also bring up that my Toshiba burner stopped reading anything that wasn't a DVD-R, DVD+R or CD-R about six months after I bought it. I don't remember how many discs went into it.
