Now, though, FCEU/X/D/SP works just as well with it using starmen.net...although it can be a little bit of a pain to set up.

XNeat adds Firefox-like functionality to the taskbar by adding the ability to drag buttons around and close windows by clicking on the corresponding taskbar button with the wheel, just like with Firefox tabs. I got so used to it that whenever I use someone else's computer I get pissed off that I can't close folders with the wheel button.

Not exactly essential, but definitely worth a look at if you like desktop system monitors.

Samurize

A friend showed me this and I was really impressed with the level of customisation that this offers. Even without any scripting or coding knowledge, I could make up this display in just a few hours:

Oh Whoops! I originally had the number in GB, so it showed 138GB, but then I changed it to MB and forgot to edit the text box.

I'll just go fix that now.

It's more flexible for me then FCEU. All FCEU offers good for me is the better cheat search engine. NESTopia FTW

It'd be funnier if I didn't know what that program was that I grew up with along with loopynes and FWNES.

Akira: I'll admit that NEStopia does a whole lot better but at the same time it has a far greater overhead. The amount of a system you need is far greater than what FCEUX would require and therefore is a lot easier on those that would be making TASes (which I primarily use FCEUX for).

The amount of games supported by NEStopia, however, is greater than anything out there and the accuracy of emulation is the best as well. But still... :\

...you know StrikerS has Sound Stage X now right?

You know whats awesome, you're arguing about NES emulators, Ive found that it doesn't really matter which one you're using as long as its running on your computer. and were arguing about this in a thread "essential software any windows pc".

So seriously guys, lets rerail this thread. Its derailed like NJ Transit.

Not much on sarcasm, I see. Oh well.

Most of the stuff I can mention outside of the ones I've already mentioned can be found here. I'm pretty sure that's most of them.

All right, fine.

Paint.NET as a replacement for regular Paint and the Image Resizer PowerToy for when you need to shrink an image and don't want to open a program to do it.

This.

Also Alt-Tab Replacement PowerToy. It displays a thumbnail of the window you're about to switch to, kinda like Flip3D for Vista, but less snazzy.
