Default 'Gaming' computer buying/creation

Hi, looked on the first couple pages of this forum and didn't see a topic on it. Sorry if I missed it.

Anyway, I was considering buying/building a computer solely for playing rhythm games [ssrmax/LR, stepmania, maybe guitar zero and others if I later decide.. my version of a gaming PC, I guess you could say]. I would like a computer that could run this all comfortably and not have to worry about lag or performance problems.

I'm a college student though, and don't have the money to shell out for a gaming machine. I know I wouldn't need that anyway, since these games aren't as processor/memory intensive as current games.

My budget is pretty stingy... $500 without the monitor. I'm thinking of getting a 19'' LCD from tigerdirect for about 200. I'm willing to spend a little more on the comp if it makes a huge difference. Definitely not over $600.

I've looked on tigerdirect and newegg, as well as gone to a couple physical stores. I've looked at some of the barebones and low priced systems. I'd like to know if there were some better alternatives, or maybe what options on these sites would be the best deal. I know a little about computers but not enough to make the best, most 'bang for your buck' decision, and I'd like some input. Thanks a lot

You could build one for around 300 if you really wanted to if that's all you're going to do with it.

You could get away with an Intel Celeron with 256MB RAM if you wanted to, but I would suggest you don't try that.

Best bang for your buck is to build your own.

$500 is pretty slim, and personally I would tell you to save a little bit more before trying to embark on buying / building a gaming PC.

That being said, here's what I came up with. This is going to be sans keyboard / mouse / monitor, which you can get whatever your heart desires.

Processor: Intel Pentium E2160
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce 8600GT SSC 256MB
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB
DVD Drive: Samsung SH-S203B
Case: Antec NSK4480

Total Price (minus shipping): $504.93

I opted to go with that setup so that he wouldn't have to get a sound card. Motherboard has 5.1 surround.
