Having a spot of trouble...

For some reason when I booted my computer today, my Windows Task Manager would not open. It keeps saying "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator". This is my own home computer, and I've never had this problem before. Could someone please assist me in fixing this?

Uh... that's impossible seeing as there is only ONE account on this computer, and it's mine, making me not only the admin, but the owner of this computer.

Try this:

1. Open regedit from the Run dialog. If the system stops you from doing this, reboot to Safe Mode and log in as Administrator.
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System.
3. If there is a Value labeled DisableTaskMgr, set it to 0 or delete it.
4. If it's not there, look for it in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\System.

Alternate method:

1. Open Notepad and copy the following into a new document:
   

   Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
   
   [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
   "DisableTaskMgr"=hex:00
   
   [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
   "DisableTaskMgr"=hex:00

2. Save the document. Select "All Files" in Save as type, and save the file as enable.reg. Close Notepad or the next step will not work.
3. Double-click the new file and answer Yes to the dialog.

For some reason, Regedit is feeling *sick*, and I can't seem to reinstall Windows XP.

Install X-Setup and look for the option called Task Manager Enabled.

It's just a security feature gone wrong. I don't know what would cause it short of some kind of malware.

Usually that's the case. Although it would royally suck if this was the "usual" case of some annoying (not to mention potentially destructive) malware.

Alright guys, let's make suggestions other than "get linux lol" or "get a mac lol"

Because obviously LHL doesn't really want to ditch a pretty-much working Windows machine to fix one problem.

If you guys get spyware, do you call Dell and order a new computer? No.

I'd suggest running a few anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, then if that fails, system restore to a time where you know Task Manager worked.
