Default Installing from CD over 3 different drives causes BSOD in XP

My dad has bought three different DVD burners and each time I try to install the stock Nero or whatever that comes with the drive, XP halts to a BSOD and starts a memory dump.

Today my dad bought a new IDE cable (my idea) and the same thing still happens. I look in BIOS but I don't really see anything that could warrant being changed. The pins on the drives are just fine too.

Bear in mind that before this drive was a fully-functioning DVD drive that I installed Half-Life from without a hitch.

Bad firmware?

Try borrowing some other DVD drive too...

Yeah, because going through THREE DIFFERENT drives isn't troubleshooting enough.

What kind of IDE drivers are you using right now? If you're running some nVidia / VIA ones, maybe try rolling back to the Microsoft IDE drivers?

Do you still have some older DVD / CD burning software on your PC? Have you tried uninstalling those?

Do you get a BSOD from other types of disks too (commercial cds, commercial dvds, burned cds, burned dvds)?

How?

I tried a CD with an older version of Nero that came with my own burner and that failed to install on the first drive. I'm going to try installing the copy of Unreal Anthology I got over the weekend and see how that goes.

Go to the Device Manager and find the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Find the device labeled IDE Controller or similar and open its properties. Click on the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver. If that doesn't work, uninstall the driver. If you have more than one, repeat for each one and reboot.

Well then.

It seems I get the BSOD anyway when trying to install Unreal Anthology.

And there are no drivers to roll back to. They're the stock Microsoft ones.

have you tried using the second IDE controller on the board (assuming there is one)

also is your primary hard drive connected to the same IDE cable as that CD drive

The DVD drive is on the second controller. There is no hard drive on it.

And if this shit isn't fantastic, look at the sort of error I got THIS TIME: "Stop 0x00000027 RDR_FILE_SYSTEM" Error Message During Shutdown

I am seriously considering rolling this bullshit back to 2000. Should I at least run Windows Update?

After some annoying errors, I've managed to run Windows Update. Good fuck, you should see the bullshit they put in the Registry...which I hope they get rid of.

I'll chime in after updating.

I'm in no urgency to fix this thing. Plus, I fear rape.

Oh god.

I must've gone through 100~ random security and whatever updates PLUS SP2 and the driver didn't update.

It's a VIA IDE Bus Master driver and I can't find the fucking thing. I can only find the model for the southern chipeset as well.

Check your motherboard manufacturer's website maybe?

And is it only CDs, or will you get a BSOD on DVDs too?

VIA Arena - Drivers Section

None of those match the model number on the chipset.

It's both medias. Nero isn't that big and Unreal is on a DVD.

Okay, so I gave up and told Windows to fuck off and plugged in my external burner.

New topic at hand.
