I wonder if the price drop on the iPhone is going to result in a corresponding price drop on the iPod Touch? It doesn't seem like it would make sense to have the 8gb Touch cost more than the 8gb Phone which is supposed to do more. I'm on a Verizon family plan so there is no chance I'm going to get a Phone, but I have been eyeing the Touch for awhile. | possible but then again, there's no monthly fees for the ipod touch.
more likely (if anything) is they keep the same price but up the storage, that seems to be their pattern with ipod stuff. link

The iPhone had a price drop because of subsidizing.

The most prevalent thing though is that the 3G feature is HSDPA already (as in High Speed Downlink Packet Access) which is considered as 3.5G. Damn up-to-date if you ask me. Not to mention extended battery life and the GPS function.
Of course there are a few things that need work. One of which is to upgrade the camera from its lame 2.0 megapixel unit.....without flash. Also, needs standard FM radio feature (though does Apple still offer the FM radio add-on accessory???). And some may not like the unavailability of choosing your own service provider.
Other than that it has improved a lot, lowered prices and are launching in more countries worldwide. All they need to do is to keep the improvements going and they will need to continue doing so (in order to become one of the top-5 in the portable phone business).
P.S.
I do wish though that they would have announced a 32GB Iphone......so as to allow for time for releasing a 64GB Ipod Touch.

i dunno if it affects everyone or just iphone users or what happens if you're already a customer that switches to an iphone. i'm not mega familiar with att to begin with anyways.

i dunno if it affects everyone or just iphone users or what happens if you're already a customer that switches to an iphone. i'm not mega familiar with att to begin with anyways. | No, the original iPhone data plan was $20 a month, and they raised it $10 to $30 a month. I went and talked to an AT&T rep about it yesterday, because I'm going to switch to AT&T when the iPhone 3G comes out. $199 is too good of a price point to pass up.
And also, as far as the reps at AT&T knows, the contract with Apple was renegotiated, so $199 is the outright price for the phone, and it looks like you aren't necessarily required to sign a contract if you pay the $199....they're apparently going to try to cut new customers and people elligible for "upgrades" deals with a 2-year contract agreement, but purchasing an iPhone 3G for $199 means no contract.
And also, as someone who uses a Sidekick 3 and has a Sidekick data plan with T-Mobile ($30 a month for unlimited data and unlimited text messaging), the extra cost is really worth it for getting full usage out of your phone.

Most of the people that complain about the iPhone has never owned a smart phone and has obviously never paid for one or their monthly fees. I have had plenty of smart phones that weren't an iPhone and they cost just as much and do a lot less.

Seriously, I save a few dollars because I got on the iPhone Data plan under the "Every other AT&T device" name of "MEdiaMAX 200" back when it was only 20 dollars a month, but 30 dollars is still very reasonable. Anyone who doesn't think so needs to shut the fuck up. I might upgrade to unlimited text messages when it stops being a ripoff (50 dollars for unlimited text and data).
Although I fail to see what the iPhone does that my current phone doesnt do just as easily, I have a pretty nice device, with good software on it.

I have had plenty of smart phones that weren't an iPhone and they cost just as much and do a lot less. | i've had plenty of smartphones, but i generally only buy unlocked phones to begin with. the last time i actually even had a tmobile phone was like 6 years ago. and with tmobile you don't have to pay any extra for 'smartphone capabilities' or whatever (like the blackberry thing on att). i just pay $5.99 for unlimited tzones.
and i would say that other than the amazing screen on the iphone, a lot of other smart phones offer a lot more capability (although i admit they do cost more than 200 bucks). example, a lot of the nokia n-series.
also, just to point out the minimum ATT plan is $40 for the voice + $30 for data. so a minimum of 70 bucks a month which ain't that great a deal. granted you are getting 3G + GPS + iPhone but i'm still not convinced that's that great. and whoever said you don't need a contract, that's definitely wrong. in fact the loophole where you could but a phone without a contract and then activate it at home (thus supplying the world with unlocked iphones) is closed. if you buy one, you have to sign a 24M contract.
