I had a 4th gen 40 gig ipod die on me in 1.5 years. After that i vowed never to buy another one again.

In general i think HD is a bad media for MP3 players. Too delicate. I think flash memory is by far more superior than HD for mp3 players. Not to mention flash memory has a better battery life

There is NO way possible to brick an iPod. The HDD's may die, but they never brick. Paradox, take care of your stuff better too.

If you still have them, I'll take the 2nd and 3rd ones off your hands.

Oh wait, yea, I forgot how my last one froze at first.

I took it in the bathroom and hooked it up to my speakers. I played some AIR while I took a shower. Got out, turned it to Alarm Will Sound and... and... and... nothing. I reset it, and the Apple sign came up and there was a clicking sound and it reset. It never could get past the Apple symbol. So it's not that we don't take better care of our shit, it's that all the iPods I've gotten just... brick. It's a mixture of my Mac being older, so it has a tewndancy to corrupt my iPod and the iPod,well, just having problems.

Oh and my iPod unfroze now.

How much abuse did you put these through? My 20 gb iPod with clickwheel (Same model as your first listed there)
I seriously did 8 GB data transfers on that iPod
on an hourly basis. I EXPECTED The hard disk to die.

About 50% of the HD Ipods uses parts from the company my dad works at

Ipod's with dead HDs are probably the ones with parts not from my dad's company. Or other way around.

I didn't do 8GB of data transfers on an hourly basis, but I babied it at first, but then after I got over the fact it was a new shiny toy it was always in either my pocket or my backpack, for better or worse. Got a lot of playtime, pretty much at least an hour a day with lots of on / off switching. It survived a couple drops too.

Same with the rest of my stuff. My iPod touch is still in the "baby it because it's brand new" phase though.

Yeah playing music off the thing is like, small 64 meg transfers that dont heat the entire unit up. Older iPods will heat up like a motherfucker during a long file transfer (I even had this problem with my iPod Mini after I replaced the hard disk with a flash card). And Heat + Hard Disk = Die. You did nothing to that device that wasnt outside its normal operating range, which for apple is unforunately not the same as what the device is allowed to do.

Well yeah. There are a lot of people out there that are like "I just looked at my iPod and it stopped working." though.

I guess I'm one of those people that buys stuff and takes it for what it is rather than trying to make it what it isn't. *shrugs*
