Default Keeping my hard drive cool.

My hard drive has been getting kinda warm (~130 degrees) and I think I should be keeping it a bit cooler. Are there things that are specifically designed to keep an internal hard drive cool? (Aside from fans)

Unless you run water cooling, no, not really. My suggestion is to mount a fan onto the HDD cage if you can, you'd be surprised at how much one fan on a HDD cage can affect the temperature of your drives.

There are HDD cooling fans you can buy that sit on top of the drive bays. I seen them at CompUSA for cheap. Check the website, you might be lucky.

At the very least, I would think of putting in one of those PCI slot fans that are supposed to blow hot air out from below the video card. It might not help much, but it's better than nothing.

if you have three 5 1/4" bays to spare, i really like the 3 to 4 hard drive rails (you end up with 3 1/2" bays) with a 120mm fan in the front. my case requires them because it has eleven 5 1/4 bays and absolutely no 3 1/2s lol

I personally wouldnt worry too much. Computer parts generally are all tested to 2 sigma certification from -40C to 120C

I use the Vortec hard drive cooler, and I love it. Has a temp readout on the front, two fan speeds, and works very well. At least ~5 - 8 C drop in temp when it's running on high while I'm playing games. It does use a 5 1/4 slot, but it's worth it. Plus, they only run about $30, at least that's what I got mine for.

My hard drive is very cool.

I managed to find a fan unit that sits in the drive bay above the one that the hard drive is in, as mentioned above, but it really depends on how your case is set out. For example, my case positions the HDD horizontally below the optical drives, in which case, a unit like this would be ideal. However if your case positions the HDD vertically (i.e. perpendicular to the desk) then I'm not sure if one of them will work. Maybe you can get ones that attach to the drive itself.

I also wouldnt worry about it too much. I managed to drive one of the hard disks in bigcore at WAY over an acceptable temperature for almost 2 years. It hasn't died yet (No, the one underneath it died. The one feeding most of the heat into it.) Theyre pretty durable devices.

Unless your hard disk is at like 60C or higher, you dont have shit to worry about.

On that subject, is there a way to cool down the hard drive of a laptop?

It seems like I dont have to do much for my laptop to suddenly sound like a jet plane...

Just keep the fans off of the table/desk that your on. Maybe try lifting it up so the breeze can flow through.

Use a laptop on a solid metal surface if possible or a table at the very least. Putting it on fabric, or carpet will trap in a lot of undesirable heat.
