This is a rant, and it expresses my opinion on the Macintosh. You've been warned.
I love seeing these posts some days. Mainly because I'm the opposite side of the coin. I used a Macintosh for 8 years. Then I got a PC. Something nice about being compatible with the working world, being able to Print (this was back in the Chooser days) and having a user interface that didn't fail (This still hasn't changed. Don't even try and argue with me on it. The things that pissed me off then are still the same now). And god forbid you ever tried to use a Non-Apple accessory with it and That company didn't provide good drivers. Oh, and Apple's nasty habit of making up a "Standard Connector" for things. Anyone remember Apple Desktop Bus? Oh yeah we call that PS/2 on PCs. Anybody remember Apple Serial Bus? Oh yeah. We call that RS232/Serial Port on PCs. Anybody Remember Apple Network Bus? We call that Ethernet on every other piece of equipment on earth. Oh yeah, all these Apple branded things? Different connectors. Because obviously the one that worked for PC users worldwide for many years wasn't good enough.
Apples virtue and their problem is they try and reinvent the wheels that aren't broken. Those 3 ports I just mentioned? They're almost all outdated now, But why were they different in the first place? What was wrong with the PC versions of those ports in the 90s? They're doing the same thing to Video ports right now. I can understand combining 2 DVI ports into a DisplayPort Port (As that's actually a standard) on their towers. But the AppleVGA port on macbooks? Fuck that shit.
Also, what the hell is this "innovative" power connector. Its magnetic so it pops out and your laptop doesn't take a tumble. That's great. if the power cord was designed correctly in the first place (IE: Being On the BACK of the unit) It would just pop out when tripped over in the first place! Oh my god! Such simplicity! Or, Better yet, we could develop a durable piece of hardware like Lenovo or Panasonic, at a reasonable price like Lenovo, and just not worry about our shit falling off the desk because it will NEVER BREAK THAT WAY. Ive dropped my Thinkpad off a 5 foot shelf onto cement. Twice. It works like it did on day one.
Then there's the operating system. I don't care how secure it is, I don't care how nice it looks, the fact is its built on the Apple LISA Interface, which is from the late 70s. That UI was advanced then (OMG IT HAD GRAPHIXTEHONEONEONEOENE) but now its just kinda... unusable. It was a GUI designed for light multitasking, something that worked really well before actual work happened on computers, and well, the internet. A OS is only as usable as its UI. While Microsoft's has been around since 1995, look at the shit they had before that. They Hit a winner and they stuck with it. Everybody keeps yelling about it too. "Oh, Microsoft never changes their UI!" Guess what guys, they've done it Once. And that's still more times than Apple has. They hit a winner and they ran with it. Whats the problem in that? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Oh wait that's what Apple does.
And its amazing how Apple can always force the industry 2 steps back every time they get something done. The iPhone for example. Now I have to deal with ROMs for my touch screen phone (Cingular 8525) that have a new TouchFLO interface on it. What the fuck is this? The "OK" Button got me to the damn today screen just as quickly. The "OK" button got me to the next task just as quickly. And sliding the device open rotated the screen just as quickly. Why the hell do I need a fancy piece of software to do what one button already on my phone does?
In the process of making something Simple (read: iPhone). Apple has managed to make 200 devices more complicated (read: anything running Windows Mobile Professional). And now other companies are developing phones with one button and a touch screen, at least they have the sense to use a 3g network technology, but god. What was wrong with the button anyway? research has shown that iPhone users make more typos in SMS messages than people who have real phone pads! Sure, a lot of phones sucked and I see what Steve Jobs was trying to do, but god damn, if you're going to fix something, actually fix it damnit.
Thats my 2 cents on Apple, the Macintosh, and their latest products. Feel free to send me a private message about it.
