Marketplace Rating: 0 | Looking for VERY cheap laptops While I'd really, really like to get something neat around the likes of a MacBook, I certainly can't afford it.
However, I'd like to use a very cheap laptop when I'm entering my Fall semester this September. Probably the most high-end thing I'd want on it is a card to detect wireless networks and browse the internet. In terms of programs, at most, probably Firefox and Microsoft Word running at the same time.
Does anybody know where I could shop for something so freaking cheap? | |

A P3 laptop is going to get the battery life of your Gameboy Pocket. Sure it runs on AAAs, but only for a half an hour.
You might consider a purchasing plan, or saving some money this summer and getting something worth it.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | Try Alienware. I think they have the best bang for your buck as far as I can see. Dell in general is a ripoff but once you start school, usually they have some student discount programs.
Although try and stick with a Mac. That will do better for my stocks. :-P, That and vista sucks.

Not to mention the battery lives on those old ass laptops are as bad as E.T. for the Atari system back in the day. Apple makes really good laptops, used to use them in my graphic arts class in high school. They don't give you random ass crashes in the middle of something. If you want windows though get an HP.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | I took out a student loan to get my Macbook, because my parents couldn't help me at all, and I managed to get it deferred until I graduate from college. I used MyRichUncle to get the loan, since I think they base your credit-worthiness on grades as well as credit history, which helps if you don't have a lot of history.
and I looove my Macbook. (posting from it now) <3

Marketplace Rating: 4 | In terms of battery life, the best performer Ive ever seen in my life is the Lenovo X60 series.
You're looking at "average idiots get 10 hours"
People who know what their doing have been known to squeeze 15
Its also small light and comes in a tablet form, but it is somewhat expensive.
However, I don't think you'd be far from what you would need with a Thinkpad R60 series. With the Extended life battery (Make sure you select it damnit!) You can pull up to 9 from an R51 with the right settings (This is watching video btw). I haven't extensively tested the battery longevity of my cousins R60, but I think she can actually get 10 if you play your cards right.
Also remember that these reports were conducted on XP, and Vista (Which you'll probably want to get anyway) Gets about an hour better battery life on my R51 than XP did.
This is completely negating the fact that these laptops are more durable than a penguin in Happy Feet. You can send it down an avalanche and all it does is have a good time.
Thinkpad R60 with Extended life battery starts at... 1120 USD (its says less, I added the extended life battery and upgraded it to 2gb of ram, you know, made it useful) and its apparently turned into a macintosh. you can get cameras and shit built into it now.
The X60 starts at *Insert large number* but its tiny and gets great performance.
Edit:
Mr I'm going to recommend Alienware?
They make the worst laptops I have ever seen in my entire life. Ive seen more of them broken than working. Ive also seen them get half hour battery performance on an extended life battery looking at the desktop
Alienware may make a decent overpriced desktop, but they make a terrible overpriced portable.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | Thats just because they are overclocked to begin with. If you turn it down they will last longer. At the very least I've yet to find a cheaper laptop that matches their base specifications.
On the side note you could spend all day arguing between alienware, dell, toshiba, etc and it's all about as pertinent as arguing which car is better, honda, toyota, nissan. Its all really preference, and occasionally you will get a laptop that dies within a year and one that lives 10. But you shouldn't make decisions based on anecdotes especially since they stand out to people's decision making. If you get a laptop that craps out on you after a year, I would just chalk it up to bad luck. All laptops are made in china nowadays so no laptop really has better craftsmanship than the another.
