Unable to read disk.

Should I buy a new laser? Or do you guys just think it is a fuse? Someone said it could be a fuse or something.

Opinions?

(It just goes to the browser screen)

Can you hear the laser moving? If not, it's a fuse, if you do hear it moving, but not reading the disc, it's the laser.

Is it a Fat old PS2? if so, this is an easy fix, but will involve you opening it. Let me know.

EDIT: I'll explain it quickly just so you have an idea...

Unscrew your PS2, take top half or casing off (be careful not to rip out the little ribbon connector that leads to the eject button etc, this will cause a lot more work...) . You should then see the disk tray cover, (has a yellow sticker on it saying "Class 1 laser product" or whatever.) unscrew that cover, you should then see a small white wheel with teeth, this adjusts the laser arm height. Mark on it the original position, then get adjusting. Do about two clicks clockwise at a time, turn it on, test, 2 clicks, turn on, test etc etc. If nothing happens, try turning it in the other direction.

If this doesn't help, revert it back to the original position, and you'll prolly have to buy a new laser lens.

EDIT 2: THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY

Wipe the little focus lens on the laser gently with a soft cloth.

It worked for me and a couple friends.

Do you know anything that would help me fix a fuse in a slim, if that's the case? My silver one died a number of months ago, and it sounds a lot like your fuse example.

I had the same problem, except mine made this awful grinding sound and scratched most of my favourite games. Turns out it was the laser scratching the surface of the disc cause it was too close. I've seen that tutorial but it didn't work for me, maybe I'm doing it wrong.

...anyways I have slimline now so my old one can go to hell.

Yeah a couple of fuses died not long ago in my slim, get a multimeter and test which fuses on the motherboard are dead, and just solder a jumper wire across them.

Haha, sorry bro, I'm not that knowledgeable in hardware. Ask around on PS2 forums, or afterdawn.com, they'll help you.

If its slim PS2

1 Flip it over and remove all the square nubs(they have hidden screws underneath!!)

2 Unscrew them

3 Seperate the the top half from the bottem , you can use some force for this, there will be a load noise sounding like you broke it, (dont worry you didnt.)

4 Follow this movie
YouTube - Tape and Tissue Mod

5 Now you can use your PS2 with the case open, meaning testing the laser function as if the case was closed.

6 Pop in a disk

7 Watch the laser on the disk if its focusing in and out, try the quote, the lasers are almost the same...

HOPE THAT HELPS
