Its in quotes because what you're asking is possible to do, however it does take some work to do it.
What you need to do, is get your hands on a Crossover Cable - A regular Ethernet cable will not work, it has to be a crossover cable. Once you've done that you need to connect it to both devices. Then you have to create a network bridge on your computer. It simulates a network device called a switch by preforming its functions in software (rather than hardware, which is how a switch works. Its also not going to be as fast as a real switch but it'll work for one device)
To make a network bridge is easy in Windows XP. CTRL+Left Click to select the interfaces you want to bridge in the "Network Connections" panel and then right click and choose "Make Network Bridge" That's all there is to it. Should work about the same in Vista but I haven't tried yet.
