Default Network question

I have a PC that is currently connected to a wireless network. I also have an xbox360 in the same room. However, it has no wireless adapter. Is it possible that I could connect my xbox360 ad-hoc to the computer's ethernet card and somehow get the internet connection on both the computer and the 360?

"Yes"

Its in quotes because what you're asking is possible to do, however it does take some work to do it.

What you need to do, is get your hands on a Crossover Cable - A regular Ethernet cable will not work, it has to be a crossover cable. Once you've done that you need to connect it to both devices. Then you have to create a network bridge on your computer. It simulates a network device called a switch by preforming its functions in software (rather than hardware, which is how a switch works. Its also not going to be as fast as a real switch but it'll work for one device)

To make a network bridge is easy in Windows XP. CTRL+Left Click to select the interfaces you want to bridge in the "Network Connections" panel and then right click and choose "Make Network Bridge" That's all there is to it. Should work about the same in Vista but I haven't tried yet.

You need two network cards on your computer.

Don't the new network cards automatically switch between crossover and regular, so that even if you use a non crossover network cable in a situation like this, it will still work?

I do have two network cards (one wireless one ethernet)
Also my ethernet card and wireless card are both from circa 2003-2004 so unless I could get that feature via a driver I don't believe that will happen.

Cross over cables by default are orange colored. Otherwise you could crimp one yourself.

No actually the majority of them don't. Its retarded considering that most switches made in the past decade do it.
