Default Problem: Desktop Monitor

So apparently the old desktop computer I sold to my sister has not died but something happened to the monitor (it's and LCD).

It's completely dark and you can barely see anything now. It's almost as if it was turned off but it's not.

I've tried thinking it was my video card (Nvidia Geforce6800OC AGP) that fried or something but I removed it and used the integrated one that originally came with the computer and that wasn't it.

Did the monitor just go kaput or something? Is it even worth it to buy a new monitor and just get them to go with buying a new computer instead. My family is very computer illiterate in taking care of them so any help is appreciated.

It's and old HP 2004 desktop computer.

2.1ghz
Windows XP SP1

They said it was making funny noises like a whirring sound so when I removed the video card it stopped.

Yeah your monitor's florescent light tubes that make it not dark black when its on are toast. Youre going to need to replace the monitor, or the LCD assembly (read: Good luck finding one), and the Inverter/Ballast unit. Cost < Work

Get a new monitor.

Agreed with dieKatze88. Your backlight is dead. It might be as simple as the ballast, and an authorized HP repair center could replace that fairly easily for maybe $100 ($50 parts, $50 labor) if you're lucky. Otherwise, parts + labor for other problems can easily add up to the price of a new monitor.

On top of the new monitor, pick up a new computer.
