Default Quick Question: MP3 Lingo

Quick question. A friend of mine was looking at MP3 Lingo as a possible alternative to Limewire and the like. As far as my understanding of it goes, it looks to be the same thing as limewire, and it claims to be 'safe' and 'legal' but I am entirely skeptical. Anyone use this before? Is it legal? Is it as much of a haven for viruses as other p2p programs like limewire? Is it better to just use iTunes?
