Default Recommendations for a camera

I don't own a camera and I looking to purchase one since AX 08 is coming up soon, so I want to know what are some good cameras that are also affordable as well, because I rarely use cameras to begin. Are the dual function ones (recording and picture taking) expensive?

I paid £150 for my Sony DSC-W80, which takes video very well, it has a 7.2 megapixel resolution, 3x optical zoom and a pretty big screen. Also uses a Li-ion battery.

Seeing as you're over in Americaland, I'd probably say you can pick one up, or at least get something close, for about $250 - $300.

That's my two cents

as far as ultra-compacts go the Canon 1100 IS is the way to go.

Great picture quality, and the best ultra-compact video recording on the market.

I had checked this one out and found some starting at 125, which sounds good but the Canon one was like 250...not what I want for a four day event

But does it also record video? It doesn't say in the description.

I dont know about point and shoot but for DSLRs, Canon, Nikon and Pentax are the highest rated cameras.

For photography, I go with canon all the way. Powershots are very cheap and fantastic.

Well, I wanted one for filming as well, not high quality videos, just random junk. My friend's camera can take photographs and also can record videos.

But I may just get Sony DSC-W80 because it looks pretty. I have a digital camera, but I don't know how well the video looks on it. Also I don't want to spend too much for a photographing camera that I'll rarely use

powershots also take fantastic video, but the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. For a decent camcorder, expect to pay 250-300 dollars, and thats with hi-8 digital cassettes, which don't look that great. I would honestly go for a powershot.

Ahh, that sounds nice, is there any specific model or is the Powershot just a single model?

Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SD1000 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver): Camera & Photo

This is the upgrade to the model I have. Fantastic price, considering I paid 300 dollars for the same camera with only 6.0 Megapixels back two years ago. I also heard the sound quality has been improved on the upgrade, so you can disregard what I said originally.

Here are some videos I've taken with it:

Youtube - Playlist: Metal Gear Pwnage

Youtube - Relentless - A story

Windnoise can be a slight problem, as in most point and shoot cameras. But if you're taking indoors, it's a really good video camera.

If you want a hacky way to get rid of wind noise, get a wind screen for a microphone, cut it up a bit and glue it around the mic on your camera.

Looks like shit, but it actually works. This totally depends on the location of your camera's microphone though.
