Windows XP Pro was never $400 at any point, not even the full is that much. XP Pro full retailed for like ~$250 at most if I remember.

These are canadian converted prices though. United States prices have usually been cheaper. I expect the prices in the U.S. to be about 350 dollars.

Hey I want directx10 cards, but I think I'll wait to leech off my father-in-law. He can get me free pretty much anything because of work. XP Pro sp2 for free, completely legit.

Actually, no, it's not. It's professional registered software, meaning the company has the registry codes, and it's being used for personal use.

That's a no-no. Not from Microsoft's end, but from the corporate end. I've had cases like that come up at work. No, it is NOT okay to get a commercial license and use it for your kid's computer. (Of course, the fact that the guy had five gigs of CP on his computer he wanted backed up was another reason entirely the case got reported to his employer.) But point is, I wouldn't go around parading illegal use of a licensed product if your uncle likes his job. Because he CAN get fired for that. It's basically stealing $200+ from the company.

Now, back on topic.

Vista.

I got to play around with Vista a bit (professional perks FTW), and I'll be honest: it's not worth these prices. I'll wait for at least a $50 drop. Don't get me wrong, Vista has some nice features, but I'll keep running XP Media Center for a while.
