It's cheaper, and that comparison was INCLUDING a 20" high-end display which the Dell did not have.

Here. Just to shut up this part of the debate: PCs have a habit of being cheaper in the OS department because unlike Apple announcing a new build bi-yearly or so, Windows has been waiting a good while now to set up and release Vista.

Also, and this may have changed, I recall at one point being unable to upgrade some software like Safari on class Macs without buying the new build. Which is immensely fucked up.

this is accurate. Tiger came out when i was a sophomore i think but XP was out WAY before that.

Apple is in deep water if they think they can compare prices with Dell or HP. Dell and HP are always able to somehow make their prices smaller. But still, Apple going in the right direction with the price.

I'm looking at the Mac Pro desktop by Apple. It costs $2,500 for 1 GB RAM and a 250 GB Hard Drive.

I'm looking at HP right now... and this is what I'm seeing for a grand total of $2,434:
-Intel Core Duo (2.4 GHZ each, so slightly less performance, admitted)
-4 GB DDR2 RAM
-500 GB Hard Drive
-5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
-Wireless Keyboard AND Mouse
-Office Basic
-Norton Sucks, so for $60 more, you're looking at good internet security, which bumps the price up to equal terms
-3 year House Call Service Plan
-HD Audio-capable sound card
-512 MB GeForce 7600 GS graphics
-Wireless card
-Windows XP Media Center edition

So I don't know what kind of crap Dell they were comparing with, but I'd say that HP tower tops the Apple tower in cost-effectiveness.

Still, though, Apple IS better than they used to be on price.

The reason behind that is theyve ditched their proprietary, expensive, custom microprocessors that cost 700 dollars a hit for all 12 they manufacture in one batch, and started using the same shit the entire world has been using since the year fucking started with 198. Different doesnt mean better, the Power PC is proof.
