Default Is there such thing as a bot on home phones?

Just about twice or three times in a week or two, I get a phone call that says "Unknown Name" with all zeros on the phone number. First time I picked it up and the caller hung up, even on the first ring. Second, it was the same number on the ID and decided to do nothing. Caller hung up before the confirmation of leaving a message. I'm thinking, is there such thing as a bot on the phone who hangs up as soon as you either pick up or before the message confirmation? If this is false, could it be a hacker who hides their number with all zeros?

...There are these things called telemarketers who often use pre-recorded messages and call listed phone numbers. You might have heard of them.

It sounds like this one has a glitch, though. Never fear, hackers are not going to blow up your computer through your home phone system. Nor could they even steal useful information from your phone system, aside from numbers recently called/received on that system. No need to bust out the tinfoil hats.

Actually, thanks to the Patriot Act, he just needs to accuse you of being a terrorist. Then it doesn't matter. For what he gets paid, he would care less about the status of your long distance coverage.

I have no involvement in this and even if I did I wouldn't have told you.

I once wrote what I called the Demon Dialer. You'd feed it a phone number and it would spam random numbers into the phone once it connected. So I suppose it is possible.

I wasn't joking.

And I'm pretty sure there is an easy mechanism out there for textspamming cell phones with fake email accounts, too.
