Video Editing Software...

Okay, here's the situation: My girlfriend and I were chatting on AIM, when the following question arose:

[01:04:21 AM] Her: hmm ... you wouldn't happen to know of any good, free or open source video editing software would you?
[01:04:58 AM] Me: Hm... unfortunately, not off the top of my head... but I know some people who would know this one...
[01:05:08 AM] Me: ALLOW ME TO QUERY THE INTERNETS!
[01:05:23 AM] Her: cool
[01:05:30 AM] Her: I downloaded windows media maker
[01:05:52 AM] Her: but it's a complete pain as far as not being able to do anything with MOV files and generally being really simplistic
[01:06:26 AM] Her: and my video converter isn't really responding well to converting it to a nice format

SO I AM QUERYING THE INTERNETS. I tried Google, but I'm retarded on video editing and don't know which random sites will take me to options that are not crap, nor do I know how to distinguish the crap from the not crap. So please, with this information, I humbly beseech thee to find my answer.

Videp editing as in cutting it up or actually editing what's in the video?

I do not know what exactly she wants to do but you can use this stuff to get a really good bang out of your buck.

Sony Media Software - Vegas+DVD Production Suite - Introduction

Theres a free trial up for download there I'd suggest that as I don't know the software personally only reccomendations, and the FREE trial is better than forking out 500$ for it. Besides theres all sorts of video editing things for "free" out there but you know that already.

After using Vegas, I'm not sure which I like better between it and Adobe Premiere. As for open source or free though, you'll probably end up with a trial.
