Default Vista beta discussion thread.

So I got the latest build of Vista. and on my box, nothing special, but was when I got it:
3.0 P4 HT
512 MB Ram
Geforce 6600 (256 mb)
SB Live!
HDA 120
HDB 320

Beta 2 was very slow
and used about 97% of ram just to function

This latest build, windows appear when you want. and it uses only 76% ram doing more tasks. Thats nice.

They also added animations for things that previously didnt have them, and sounds for things that didnt previously have them. There are less XP icons too.

amongst all the crap about the pricing of it, lets actually talk about the operating system its self.

my company's MSDN subscription has VIsta beta 2 in it but it was real buggy in drivers for older 478 p4 motherboards
it seems to have a larger array of compatibility with LGA775 boards
we are awaitng the final version as well

Go ahead and download the latest leak. I have a MSDN subscription too. Your Beta 2 key will work.

Level Up!

I tried to install it and I was asked for a serial number.

I was considering looking into Vista until I found out that it would try to DRM me to death!

First of all: My Computer Specs

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (At least it's better than my old P4 3.0)
1 GB DDR2 Ram
ATI Radeon X800 XL
2x 80 GB Hard Drives

The install was nice. Even with the chipset that only came out last month, I didn't have to install a single driver. Everything was found. The install was close to 1/2 an hour. I haven't had any lag at all. I guess that problem comes with time, though. I'm half tempted to stick with Vista and just wait for that update that takes it from RC1 to the final release. I haven't tried to install the Adobe CS2 Suite yet, but that would be the only thing stopping me.

Windows Photo Gallery is awesome. I love it a million times better than the old windows picture viewer. Tagging and organizing collections is so easy and fast now. And I love all of the options you can have with making a slideshow out of it.

Aero makes Windows XP look like crap. My only concern with Aero is that it might give games a performance hit, but I don't know if it actually will or not cause I haven't played any video-card intense games on Vista yet.

Windows sidebar wasn't half as impressive as I thought it would be last year, but I guess it's acceptable. At least it's a free ObjectDock.

So, I'm going to keep on playing around with it. It should be stable enough by now that I might go ahead and use it as my main OS.

I have Vista Pre-RC1 installed on my iMac, and it's not too great. It really is just Windows XP with a face-lift and a push-up bra!
