Default Weird battery problem...

I'm trying to get this old laptop running for my father; it's a Compaq Presario 12XL300B that I've redone a few times before and have since settled (due to him) for Windows 2000 Pro, SP4 on. Updates are on it. It has a good enough system spec to do a fairly decent job (320MB RAM -maximum-, 40GB HD, 600MHz Celeron, etc.).

Everything works fine but one thing. My PROBLEM is that the power management on it is less than adequate...that being that whenever I start up the system, it identifies the power as 'Using AC Power' even if it isn't plugged in. Upon scanning for new hardware, however, it comes up find an ACPI compliant battery and, like magic, everything's working but here's the kicker...

When I go to reboot and get back to Windows 2000, we're back to this same situation until I re-scan for hardware changes and then everything's fine.

I dropped Xubuntu on this before 2000, a shame I couldn't keep it but he just didn't want it, and it never had this issue. The BIOS does not have anything in pertinence to the APM to modify or anything in regards to a battery...it's too simple of a BIOS from Phoenix OF WHICH I haven't been able to find a flash on it regardless...but it shouldn't be a problem due to it being able to work on a separate OS. I would wonder if this is a strictly W2K problem.

Now it's not a life-threatening thing or anything but I'm not going to have my father scan for hardware changes every time he boots his system just to see what the status is on his battery. Is there something I'm missing or what's the deal? The battery is fairly new and was replaced from the original and worked just fine beforehand...so I'm not exactly sure what I'm missing here.

Try looking around for a power management driver. Some thinkpads do the same shit.
