Its fine. Its not smart, but it will work and youll probably be fine.

Of course, you've also got User Account Control (UAC) which is a pain in the ass but at least gives SOME SORT of a stop point for MUCH LESS learned users to go 'wait a minute'. The firewall's quite a bit better...so sure it's got a nice armament for security by itself in comparison to XP.
Better is to cite a nice article on it: here.
It depicts Vista w/o anti-virus, since the claim is it's more than self-sufficient. However, it does come down to common sense really... Quote: The Bottom Line
Windows Vista, with UAC, is fairly well protected against malware. However, the kind of people who run Windows without antivirus protection and never get into trouble are not the type of people who even need UAC to begin with.
Antivirus programs, therefore, are still absolutely necessary. Until a user learns enough not to open attachments or peruse other avenues that often lead to infection, he or she still needs an antivirus shield humming along in the background at all times. Once a user learns good enough habits to avoid infection without antivirus software, UAC just might be overkill.
The best defense against computer viruses might not even be UAC or antivirus software, but a crafty combination of education and common sense.
| So there are probably ways for Vista to be taken down by viruses but it, like Mac, aren't really that targeted. Having a higher security algorithm on top of the resources it has being fueled into security, among other things, probably helps.
I still don't run Vista though. | |

Marketplace Rating: 8 | not at all, i have no personal reason to switch to vista. the few additional things i have heard about that are neat are irrelevant to me, and i like the way xp looks in comparison. vista is trying way too hard to look shiny and pretty and new and it comes across as very saccharine to me
also i know where everything is in xp; i got irritated because they fucking moved task scheduler and i had to waste 10 minutes finding it (as an example)
basically i see nothing that directly shows me "vista is better than XP and here is why" and due to that, compatibility issues, and and overall dislike for the interface, fuck vista
ps acejay i make enough in 2 days to buy vista ultimate
this is all irrelevant; if you are not running an antivirus and are on an OS other than linux you are an idiot

Until you understand (which you currently don't) you're not going to fucking get it. Arguing that Vista is crap when you don't even use it is like saying "Hey we should all not cool our beer with refrigerators because Ice works fine! Ive never actually used a fridge but you know, this Ice shit is novel"
tl;dr: Shut the fuck up.

viruses aren't meant to cause destruction or fuck shit up anymore, they just silently connect to an irc channel to act as zombie botnet DDOS / spam shit or sit around silently until you log into a secure SSL site, at which point the keylogger steals your shit.
even sony's playstation site was harboring an injected SQL script that pushed out javascript that would cause IE and firefox to download and install one of these. you can buy a rootkit wholesale and package your own custom malware or logger for like $400 from people on efnet. scan around until you find a site that doesn't santize their SQL input and presto, you've got whammies

vista moved significant parts of the graphics and audio subsystems from kernel space into user space. there is a huge performance hit and anyone saying just buy new hardware is an idiot. a 7800gtx shouldn't go from 400fps to 49fps
start menu searching -> use launchy
superfetch -> it sucks and slows the system down in my experience
aero -> uxtheme.dll hack + visual styles
granted vista has ipv6 and uh, purble place

Marketplace Rating: 0 | also the return on investment for most companies looking at migrating to vista is shit. moving will cost them in planning, making sure all their old applications will mesh well with the virtualstore junction re-direct shit that vista pulls via UAC, buying new hardware with additional ram, etc. most places are waiting for windows 7 when they are going to make hardware refreshes as well.
to give an example of how confusing vista can get, if you install sm 3.9 on vista and load it up and make an edit to a song, it will be there until you close sm. then suddenly, poof it's gone. what happen? oh wait, it re-directed all write output to the user virtualstore folder instead of C:\Program Files. That is fine. the problem is, sm isn't configured to look there by default, so essentially your edits disappear into a folder and you will never know unless you understand exactly how UAC works on a technical level.
this is sm's fault as a legacy application but it's still an issue to consider. you run into multiple problems like this across the board using vista; i'd know because i help people with an enterprise app on vista and xp every fucking day.
