I only upgrade when I get a new computer that comes with the next big thing. When I started looking at laptops I was a bit leery, because Vista doesn't have a great reputation. That said, the switch has been pretty much painless. The only issue I had was with setting up PHP, which was more of a combination of noting being e-smart enough to do so in the first place and trying to use an XP tutorial.
I haven't really noticed it being any better or worse than XP in terms of viruses but I never really got many of those.
Vista has run everything I throw at it better than my XP box did, but there was a significant hardware upgrade between the two.

It's dumb if you're on a shared family computer, but if it's your own, there's no reason to keep it on. UAC is just that, a tool to scare new PCs users and make sure they don't do anything stupid.

That is fine. the problem is, sm isn't configured to look there by default, so essentially your edits disappear into a folder and you will never know unless you understand exactly how UAC works on a technical level.
this is sm's fault as a legacy application but it's still an issue to consider. you run into multiple problems like this across the board using vista; i'd know because i help people with an enterprise app on vista and xp every fucking day. | Isn't the simple solution to install SM somewhere other than Program Files? Shoot, you could make a folder in C:\ called "Program Files 2" and dump everything in there, at least in theory.
And what exactly does UAC do anyway?

Just saying.
