Default Why does my net connection SUCK?

I'm sure this has been talked about 837965485134054 times but I don't feel like searching.

So anyway, I know quite a bit about computers, but networking is what I'm really not very familiar with. That being said, here are my results from speedtest.net:

Yeah, I know these stats absolutely SUCK. I mean I'm downloading a 1.2 GB update file on my 360; I started the download around 8:30 AM and it's probably just barely halfway done. It's 2:30 right now. WTF.

The stats say my results are drastically lower than the ISP average (Bellsouth) and that it'll take over 7 hours for me to download an 800MB file.

From my personal experience, my download speed usually hovers around 30 kbps. If I'm lucky one day, I'll get around 100 kbps. It's not much better though, it still takes ages to download anything larger than a few MB.

So my question is, why? Is there anything I can do to get at least a decent connection speed? According to my Broadband plan I'm supposed to have a 6 Mbps connection. Clearly this is not even close. I've put up with it for almost 2 years, but I know this just isn't right.

If you need this info:
Modem - 2Wire HomePortal 1700HW
ISP - Bellsouth
Net-Connected Devices - 2 Desktops, 1 Laptop, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360
OS - Windows XP for all 3 PCs, SP3 for one desktop and the laptop, SP2 for the other desktop

I probably have at some point, but I really can't remember. I haven't been downloading much, so I guess I just made myself deal with it. But I've just begun to really understand what my connection speed should be. I think I have to check my DSL filters, I have no idea how my dad arranged those things.

OMG you're so dumb.

1. DSL modems are notorious for being crap. Especially after 2 years.
2. Setup your router to auto reset every night around 3 am. Trust me, good things.
3. WTF why the fuck haven't you called them in 3 years. Get their asses out to fix it.

Wow. I am retarded. Two of our DSL filters were backwards. There's like a long line of different cables going into filters and I just switched the two around, now download speeds are awesome.

Note that not all modems are configurable from what I know about networking! Someone reccomended I get myself a Linksys switcher or router(I forgot) and use it thatway, rather than the DSL by itself.
