Default Windows: SNES emulator not using right IP address

So I'm trying to get a game going with a friend and it hadn't occurred to me that both of us have our SNES emulators using the wrong IP address.

Both emulators show the IP in use as 192.168.x.x, which is what's used for...well, I can only describe it as networked computers/devices under a modem's/router's connection.

I told my friend to use whatismyip.com and we got what I'm sure of is our real IP address. Problem is, we don't know how to force Zsnes to use the IP address reported by whatismyip.

I'm on Windows 2000 and my friend is on XP. I would like to get the process for BOTH computers. Also what doesn't kind of help is that while most likely my friend is directly connected to her modem, my 2000 is connecting to a range extender which is connecting to a wireless router that is connected to my DSL modem. =\

Please do help.

Reenee, the problem is youre using your internal IP addresses.

Home routers use whats known as NAT Overloading to turn 1 IP address into many. Otherwise known as PAT.

What this does, is the router turns the external IP Address of your connection, say... 5.7.3.1 and turns it into a non routeable IP address (192.168.x.x)

what you need to do on both machines, is forward the port for ZSNES (no idea) to the computer, and then connect to eachother's EXTERNAL ip address, which can be found by going to WhatIsMyIP.com

I don't think he was talking about 5.7.3.1, but the IP added into the whatismyip.com link. And since your logged public IP didn't match up with the one posted, I removed it just to prevent any nuisances from occurring.

You could try setting your computer to be in the "demilitarized zone". I have linksys router and that's what it's called for me. Basically it opens all ports to the outside. Then you'd theoretically connect to the ip that whatismyip says. It works for me running a web server so I'd assume it'd work for zsnes. I dunno if that's helpful or not.

Also, with ZSNES you need to make sure you've both got the same version of it. Some use 1.36, others have 1.42. They won't connect to each other. Furthermore, ZSNES is really picky sometimes...make sure both of you have the EXACT SAME rom. Even the "same" rom from different sites can have different checksums, which is what ZSNES uses to make sure they're identical. Furthermore, consider possibly using zbattle to establish the connection.

You'll still need to open up some ports and do some forwarding to make it work, but there's info on the site for that. It's a lot easier than trying to establish it directly.

Oh, and I'd not recommend opening every port. Doing this is not exactly good practice, as that's just creating some number of thousand vulnerabilities. If you absolutely can't find a port number within a program or documentation somewhere, Ethereal is a good, free tool for capturing port numbers and other useful information.

Well...if you have a netgear router like me you go to NETGEAR Support Home Page (or192.168.0.1) and somewhere on the left it will say WAN Setup. There is a setting there (called DMZ) where you specify the internal ip of the computer you want to be open to the internet. Type in the internal ip (for me it's 192.168.1.3), save and it should work.
