Now, he's not too bad -- he's getting reasonably good grades for all the 5key songs. The thing is, I want him to move away from 5key and into 7key so that he can enjoy IIDX rather than just beatmania.
Would anybody have any suggestions about doing that? Keep in mind that he is only 9 years old so I'm looking for songs that are relatively easy and interesting to keep his attention (musically, that is) on either 9th Style, 10th Style, RED, HS or DD that I can introduce him to.

(I think Beginner mode gives song previews on the songwheel?) He already has the general concept down, so adding two more keys isn't really going to make it that much harder, especially if he's made it up to the upper end of BMUS's 5-key songs.

He's been using a IIDX controller to play 5-key on BMUS, so the different controller isn't an issue - he's just going to have to start using those two keys on the far side.

I had to switch turntable sides, as well as get used to a brand new controller >.<

Yet my 5k level is equal to my 7k level (Happy sky ratings, at least. :P)
Anyways, it all boils down to preference. No matter how you look at it, BEMANI are music games. You're supposed to have fun with them.
So whether you use 5k in IIDX, Bar rape in DDR, Auto-Bass in DM, or Light in GF, as long as you're having fun, it doesn't really matter.
So if he really wants to play 5k, let him play 5k.
Ya never know, he may end up a 5k tatsujin or something!
