Marketplace Rating: 4 | Abandoning IIDX to learn a real musical instrument Just interested in a few opinions on this, so has anybody ever done this (though I guess if they have, they probably wouldn't be here on the forum) and why did you do it? Also, what instrument did you take up and how is it going?
I stopped playing about about a week and a half ago because I've always wanted to take up an instrument and people told me I that I should apply my IIDX skill to something - I love classical music and keys (obviously) so I've taken up Piano. Self-taught and it's actually really enjoyable. I feel like I'm picking it up pretty quickly and can play a few simplified classical pieces already.
I also find I get more of that gratification factor when I learn a song on Piano and FC it (yeah, I judge success the on Piano the same as IIDX) than if I FCed a song on IIDX, so it might be a while before I go back to IIDX.
Actually, I'd be interested to hear reasons why people haven't given up a music game to play actual music as well.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | for me it's simple...i'm too poor to buy an instrument...and even if i did have the money to buy one it would probably go into computer parts and beer

Marketplace Rating: 56 | I played percussion, mostly keyboards, in middle/high school before I even touched IIDX, and I still played in percussion ensembles in college after I picked up IIDX (and Pop'n and Guitar Hero). It kind of silly to think that you can only do one or the other. I mean if you want to play an instrument, that's cool, but it's no different than using your time for other activities.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | I would like to learn to play the piano (I've already been playing the trumpet for almost 6 years, so maybe I'll switch instruments & see if I can learn piano), but I wouldn't abandon a game (in this case, IIDX) just because I can play a real instrument. In fact, the music from Bemani games makes me want to learn how to play them on piano (or in GF/DM's case, guitar & drums) even more.

I guess "abandon" is too strong a word to use. I intend to play IIDX again at some stage, but would like to focus on Piano until I feel I've accomplished what I want to.

In my opinion there is no reason to "quit" IIDX to play a musical instrument. I would say do both, the timing of IIDX and the ability to hear the music will help you play an instrument and vice versa. and if you don't have time.. I would say at least play it in a 80/20 ratio.
IIDX and playing real music is very complimentary to each other.
Unless you just are sick of IIDX, then i'd say go for it.

Play an instrument, play IIDX, they don't really work against each other in any way.

Marketplace Rating: 8 | i guess i go in the other direction. i've played piano for years. and recently i decided to try my luck with a synth. for some reason playing synth made me want to try out IIDX since i do love electronic music and the controller somewhat reminded me of a midi controller heh.

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Interestingly, I used to play drums before and I took lessons more than five years ago. I guess what led me to learning drums was because I started getting addicted to DM (it was called Percussion Freaks back then in our region).
I guess the same also applies for why I took piano (perhaps because of BM IIDX and a bit of KBM). Ideally though, I want to find a way so that my skills and techniques that I learn from piano can be applied to BM IIDX and vice-versa. Sorta like what LISU did before (in that he was a piano master who was also playing BM IIDX & is considered as a 'one-hand legend' in the BM IIDX community)

Marketplace Rating: 0 | IMO, i will never abandon IIDX, even though taking up a musical instrument would be both nice and probably a wiser decision, I just don't have the motivation, nor the time, to take up an instrument. I've tried it all, piano and guitar(when i was younger), but i just show no interest in learning how to play, or practice, nor do I show any interest now. I know what your gonna say. Since you practice playing IIDX, why not practice getting good at an instrument? I just show no desire to. IIDX will always be my instrument.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | IIDX is not an instrument
Guitar Hero is not an instrument
It is possible to play IIDX or Guitar Hero in addition to a real instrument. You're not "graduating" or anything, it's two completely different things.
