Default Finally modded mine

Well, after reading how easy it is to do this mod (thanks word) I decided to do it.

I bought Sanwa Keys but I got the lamp versions to save money (instead of the LED versions, since I have no aspirations to wire the lights up anyways). Unfortunately the lamp version is not offered in smoke/black, so I went with blue keys for keys 2, 4 and 6.

Here's some pics showing my project:

Wiring:

My custom MDF bottom panel before painting (my bro made it for me with a CNC, it's 1" thick and the key area is cut out 3/4" deep):

3 coats of primer and sanded with 320 grit paper until nice and smooth:

Top coat:

Base attached with 6 panhead wood screws:

2" anti-skid pads added for stability:

Finished product (I made the mistake of not taping off the panel sticker and accidently knicked it in several places):

I spent my spare time over the last week or so to get this done (around 8-12 hours). Dremeling the plastic and PCB was a real bitch but otherwise everything else was easy. The controller is nice and heavy now, it does not slide around at all and is infinitely better. The only problem now is getting used to these Sanwas and breaking them in . So far the keys are much more accurate and I am beating my old EX scores by a lot, but I am also failing songs I could pass before since the keys are harder to press.

No major differences in wiring, probably only the wire colours.

Nice job on that base!

Also, I've always prefered blue Sanwa to black/smoke

Hey man, that is looking good... I wasn't sure when you said you got blue buttons instead of black, but they definitely match the KOC rather nicely.
Have you considered the mod to raise and move the turntable to offer a more arcade-like experience?
Oh, and out of interest, how much did you spend on the materials including the new buttons?

Don't think I'd want to do this to my jkoc, we've been through too much together :p

However, I have a crappy uskoc someone gave to me this year that doesn't even work lying around. Maybe this would be worth trying.

Well, I measured them on the fly without writing them down and just called out the measurements to my bro as he drew it on his PC.

But I can remember some stuff:

The panel is the same size as the bottom of the controller (about 17" x 7 7/16" and 1" thick).

The notched out area for the eject button is about 1" x 3 1/8".

The opening for the buttons starts 10mm away from the right edge and has about 45 mm above and below it. The opening is about 7 inches wide. It is just over 3/4" deep.

The holes are 12mm in diameter... Even with them this big I found myself needing to magnetize my screwdriver to point them to the screw holes.

Yeah, I really would have liked to get the black keys, but they were 21 bucks a piece versus 13 a piece for my blue keys. But when I did get the blue ones, I was pleasantly surprised; they looked better than I thought they would. Literally the only difference is that the button houses a bulb instead of an LED... the microswitch and button assembly are identical.

With regards to doing the turntable mod, that is something that I would do if it were quick and easy, but I don't think I have the time and energy required. I would likely have to do it myself, since my bro is too busy these days. I think I would end up having to build a proper wooden case and forgo the Konami casing altogether. And I always told myself that if I cared that much, that I'd just drop the half grand on a Dao lol.

In terms of cost, I was fortunate enough to get the bottom free, but if you wanted to buy piece of 1" MDF it could get costly if you need to buy a large sheet.
Hopefully you can buy a tiny piece and not have to spend more than 20 bucks.

The keys were 13 bucks a key, so about 100 bucks for the keys shipped, but I also spent 5 bucks on wiring from a local electronics store and 15 bucks for a 100-pack of 0.187" quick disconnects. Paint was 10 bucks.

So all in all, I spent about 130 bucks to do this mod. Not bad since the controller is arguably almost as good as a dao FP7, and importing those would cost me over 400 bucks Canadian (I live in Canada).

If I had to critique my controller, it would be sweet if the TT was higher. I don't care about the distance since I don't play at the arcade, but having a higher TT would feel better with the Sanwas.

Err.. what are the buttons for start/vfx on-off/vfx change called (serial number)? Instead of modding just the KOC might as well go all out and build something from scratch.
