Default Anything wrong with never clearing lvl. 10+ songs?

At this point, I'm kinda wondering about the fact that I don't think I'll ever be able to clear anything higher then a level 10 song. I've tried practicing, alternating styles, playing with thumbs, etc.
Another thing is that I don't really find 10+ lvl. songs that much fun to play. I'm trying to mash so many keys that I find I don't really enjoy the song or even playing the song that much. So, like the topic states, in the realm of IIDX players, are you looked down at if your not able to play max level songs and whatnot? I consider myself a good IIDX player, but I don't think I'll ever ascend higher then 9's.

Try taking an extended break, then coming back and trying some of the easier 10s. When you're able to read the charts it won't feel like key mashing, it'll feel like precise button pressing.

who gives a shit what other people think

How are you trying to surpass the 10's? I can give you a rather sizable list of songs that are 9's but should be 10's and vice versa if you'd like.

But to answer your question, no. This game is hard.

I personally think the 10s and 11s have the best charts, in that I enjoy playing 10s and 11s the most, but that's obviously personal preference and helped by the fact that I can pass all 10s and 11s with total ease.

As for whether you'll be looked down upon, the obvious answer is "who cares what other people think," but like m33sh said, the game is hard; if you enjoy playing songs under 10, then you should be happy with that.

What's the general consensus on Ristaccia [H]? I know it's generally regarded as a tough 9, but should it be a 10? I can pass it fine on my JKOC, but when it comes to the spacing/height of my FP7's TT, the last third of it gets way difficult. I can pass Time To Air [H], Karma [A], Snow Storm [H], Contract [H], Mei [H], and Xepher [H]...but the end of Ristaccia just seems balls-to-the-wall impossible right now.

Aside from that...

I can totally see the OP's point. I can never see myself enjoying passing 12s, unless doing so impresses cute weeaboo girls who play Pop'n much more than passing an 11 does.

I haven't come to a huge wall yet, I'm still passing a few new songs every now and then...but I'm sure there will come a time when I look at most of my uncleared charts and just say "NO. THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE." Maybe it's just my amateur perspective, but it seems like there might be a sweet spot around the hard 9s and 10s where you're getting a lot of notes, scales, and scratches...but aren't getting completely screwed over by jacks, complex chord scales, and incomprehensible scratch patterns. There are enough notes for you to pretty much be "playing the song," while not being absurd. I mean, as you get better, your standard of "absurd" changes...but there comes a point in 99% of IIDX players' lives, where you're just like "This is good enough for me," right? Right?

I always thought that point would happen where "this is good enough for me" would happen. It never happened. I always end up getting motivated to shoot even higher.

Tru dat.

I remember saying to myself, 'if I can only pass No.13 on Hyper consistently, I can retire happy'. Well, I can do that now, but I still want more.

As for 10*+ songs not being enjoyable, I used to think the same, but as someone previously said, it's just because you can't read the chart. I used to think the same about 10*'s, but last night I went through all of the Gold 10's and only failed one or two. It's amazing how your sight reading skills improve without you even realising. Remember; the only way to get better is to keep failing.

The 10's/11's are where I think most people get stuck. I guess you can call it the line seperating experts from everyone else.

I think you shoudn't worry so much about comparing your skills in this game with others, especially if you've only been playing for a year or so. remember that this game has a very steep learning curve, so don't be surprised or depressed if you're not as good as many others.

Also remember that there's more to beatmania than just passing all of the hardest songs, you must also have accuracy in your timing to be able to AA or AAA consistently all of the easier songs. this is something that truly separates the good players from the bad ones.

So if you feel tired of failing all of those 10's and 11's, just go back to some easier songs and try to improve your timing instead.

Heh, I've been playing for almost 2 years, and I can only pass 2 11's, and not even some 10's.

I'm sure there is the odd 9 or 8 I can't pass either. =/

Been playing since 2001 and can't beat many 10's. Don't really care, I went onto doubles instead (where' I'm up to 8's) as well as back to 5-key beatmania and 10-key doubles - which actually helps with IIDX surprisingly because even on difficulty setting 1 it's harder than IIDX on 4, and the note charts rarely have any similarity to IIDX's. Double on bm is even weirder as two right turntables completely destroys the 14-key strategies - you quite often have to scratch the left side with your right hand, I find.

It'd be interesting to try some 10's and 11's now, considering the 5-key thing. I swear it does help though, you think you're failing when you're actually at 98%.

Just keep playing songs you can barely pass and songs that you can't pass and you'll pass them eventually, it took me 2 years to get from level 10s to start passing easy level 12s

Keep playing, I've been addicted to this game after buying it (almost a year playing) and I can do almost all 10s, some 11s, easy 12s.
I never thought I'd get this far actually.

I'm almost on the same boat as you as regards to the level 10 and level 11 stuff. In my case however, I have been playing for more than five years (I first started the game during the timeframe when 9th style video arcade version was about to be released and/or when Konami released 7th style for the PS2.........or something like that probably)

Now it's 2009 and I haven't cleared a single level 12 yet. Because of that, I sometimes wonder if I've hit a roadblock or something as I really feel that I'm not progressing/improving at all or something. That and I've only cleared very few level 11 songs (only one was hard clear= take it easy [a]) and I still can't hard clear No.13 [h] for shit. It really feels demoralizing to me at times but I guess that's just the way it is.

Still, it could probably be due to the fact that I don't play BM IIDX often (only once, twice or thrice a week at most; I mostly concentrate on Maximum Tune 3 DX these days) but yeah.

Just sharing my experience I guess

I always think the charts you enjoy the most should be those one or two level below your limit.

I can pass a few 11s now, and I enjoy playing 9s and some easy 10s.

Being able to read the chart so well that you can concentrate on timing should be the main factor which contributed to the enjoyment. You have no worries failing, just play as good as you can. Kind of like"pwning" the chart.

It's also fun when I try out a song I normally fail but suddenly I'm able to pass it. I can actually read the chart and hit the corresponding keys which I couldn't before, it's like pushing myself to the limit and enjoying the rush. This happened to me mainly when I started getting into 11s, I just don't expect to clear one but BAM and passed with an A.
