Don't stress too much about it.
I've found with IIDX and i've heard quite a few others say this as well, that timing and passing are worked on a little independent of each other
as for what I mean by that...
(Edit: This is too long, not all that useful, I advise not reading it, just go down to the tl;dr section)
its different to play the easiest 1*s and try to hit the notes dead on than it is to try to play a 5* and just try not to miss any/many notes. If you want to improve your timing, practice by playing some really easy songs... like all the 1*-3*s on a bunch of different styles, and play each song like 4 times in a row and then move on. Since you can't AA anything then probably you don't have a clear idea of what the timing window is really like. This will help you with that.
Also, I advise not being at all concerned with AAAs just yet if you're at the point of passing 6s. Why? Because when you can read/play 6*s, 3*s are hard to nail the timing on. When you can read, say, 9*s though, 3*s are a gimme, and up through 6*s are feasible.
If you spend your time mashing away trying to AAA every 1*-3* you're going to improve your timing a little, but it doesn't translate very well into playing better at higher levels.
tl;dr: Variety is good. Styles, songs, difficulties, its all helpful.
