@Deca: I never had a JKOC, but based on pics I've seen I think there are places in between plungers and stuff where one can stick cardboard. On the USKOC, there's nothing in between the key and the rubber button attached to the circuit board. It's probably just space there. | Yeah USKOC...
maybe it's just the pennies I'm using?

| Well, it's supposed to help with timing by making you react faster, but I guess it's all just preference.

I modded mine with cardboard. It was different from the JKOC mod, because the keys are designed differently, but it works just the same. I should take pictures, 'cause it makes the controller better for playing.
Basically, you have to cut a rectangle of cardboard that's slightly smaller than the key, then cut out the four corners, and jam it into the underside of the key, so that it's tight and won't fall out. It's not as neat and tidy as a JKOC mod but it does the same thing. I've never had to replace my cardboard, though my KOC hasn't gotten used in a while.

Marketplace Rating: 2 | I'm new...sort of. I used to play IIDX casually (had an umodded JKOC) about 5 or 6 years ago. Stopped due to girlfriends/college/life in general. Now that I have a full time job I picked the game back up again. I'll probably be on these boards a bit during work and such.
I just got a US KOC on the marketplace here, I ordered a pop'n music ASC from dj dao (that's been nearly two weeks in coming, I hope it's still on its way) and if I find myself wanting one I'll probably get a IIDX ASC from him as well.
I'm not that good (AAA/AA some 7s, clear 9s and one 10 (V)) so I'll probably be coming here for advice a bunch...cheers.
I still don't know how to use sudden+ effectively. Every time I use it and set the green number to 350 or so, my scores go to crap. I guess I'm just bad at reading fast...

Marketplace Rating: 1 | Sud+ isn't supposed to make you read faster. The idea is that you find a comfortable reading speed using Sud+, and through using that you can have that exact speed or very close to it no matter what song you play, that's why the GRN number is important.
You sound like you're off to a good start. Don't worry too much about Sud+ if it isn't helping, if you already have some AAAs then you have a decent grasp on timing. I went through several periods of not using S+ then using it then not using it again until I finally settled into my GRN300 S+ close to 200 settings. Something will just eventually click for you and you'll know when you have it right.
At any rate, welcome to the forums

Marketplace Rating: 0 | I've been *very* casually playing this for about 3 years at local arcades and a little at home on a JKOC. I play in couple month spurts before I get bored (lacking willpower to take down the walls). However when I get back into another few month session I find that I can play and beat harder songs than I could before but still my timing barely improve at all. If I can beat at least 50% of the level 6 songs on say...GOLD, I still can barely A half of the songs on 4 and pathetically not even A everything else.
I know the timing in this game is very strict and I play it at a few locations so I don't think it's an isolated case of screen calibration lag. I've played plenty of DDR, PopN, Drummania, and Guitar Freaks and my timing on those games continued to improve but since they don't have as strict of a window as IIDX I can't seem to compare my skills in timing to IIDX.
Since I've played so many Bemani games, DJ Max, as well as US games like RB and GH, I know what good timing is supposed to be and when I'm hitting the notes exactly where they should be in the song. I know part of the problem I have in some songs is that it seems like the developer couldn't decide between the beat or the melody to make the notes hit on which is really annoying, especially when they go back and forth on a song.
Is there some sort of hit a little earlier than you think or hit a little later than you think deal with IIDX? I can play on REALLY easy songs and still not get a AA because there's just something about IIDX timing I can't pick up on. There are certain songs that somehow (this is going to come off cheesy) I can really *feel* the beat...some songs I really like and I tend to get much better scores on them.
I can literally use a metronome on a song with a steady beat that uses the beat for the keysounds (or a portion of it) and still can't get flashing greats consistently.
Is there a secret to IIDX that doesn't exist in other music games? I get better and faster with movement and reading...but hardly better at timing.
Please help my find my IIDX timing mojo,
CatAstrophy

CatAstrophy | 2dx improvement can be kind of weird. Some people have timing click right away but can't pass high level songs for a looong time. I was just the opposite, I passed my first 9 in a couple weeks and worked up around 11s pretty fast, but couldn't really AAA anything consistently until I was already beating some 12s years later.
Don't let it discourage you, improve where you can and every once in a while try some easier songs for timing. For me, right before Gold came out (and I've been playing 2dx since around 2003) I threw in Happy Sky and decided I was going to learn how the hell to score, and it just sort of finally clicked.
It's kind of a common experience honestly. People will tell you to use different HS or use Sud+ and all that, but really none of that is going to really help much until after that initial epiphany. Just don't give up!

-as far as experience goes, Timing just comes with playing. Play a lot and it will come naturally as you stretch the tendons in your fingers and hands and gain muscle memory. Until you can comfortably hit every note in a chart without thinking about it (random helps for weird chords/beatstreams that you dont see often) you won't be able to AAA, as your mind will be focused on hitting everything correctly, not timing everything.
other easy AAA's you might want to watch out for:
fly above (all charts)
DoLL (all charts)
Love Will...(all charts)
Our Song (all charts)
And my brain draws blanks now. Been grinding the shit out of empress so I can't think of too many other tracks that aren't on 16 lol.

World Wide Love is though.

Marketplace Rating: 1 | Our Song has some parts that would be hard to time if you're just starting into the 8's and 9's. It's Empress' Cannibal Coast, if that can make any sense. Really easy majority, but still has a tricky section or two.
The scale at the end of DoLL is weird and annoying and doesn't make AAA'ing it easy for lower level players.
Fly Above is gayer than Freddie Mercury and Klaus Nomi having gay sex in a men's bathhouse.
