try looking for a beatmania US Bundle with the controller at your local EB/ used game retailer.

if not you're looking at about $60 for the controller $60 for a game (I recommend 12 HAPPY SKY for a beginner) and about $20 for a ps2 mod kit if you need one.

God WHY would you suggest Happy Sky do you want them to have screwed up timing forever?

Really, get ANY style but HS. You don't want to cripple yourself with its godawful timing.

I started off with Happy Sky and my timing is fine.

But anyway, for a new player I would recommend any style 9th and up.

This

Although you can try picking up from the pre-9th styles as well. Go for 7th style (easy for singles), 8th style (lots of songs) and 6th (drill mode is really helpful esp. to those fresh to the game).

Oh and do get 10th style (which is the easiest to start on for doubles play).

That's pretty much it there

I would suggest Happy Sky, also.

If you're a new player and you're planning on picking up new styles here and there along the way, then the awkward timing on Happy Sky won't be too big of a problem. Beginners shouldn't be too concerned with getting good grades right off the bat, anyways.

sixth and core remix since it has a nice variety and a lot of good options

by all means make another thread if you want to know what style you should get first too

preferably you should do this without searching for the other five trillion threads which have asked and answered the exact same question

beatmania isnt a cheap game to get into

if you get a cheap controller youll only wish you got a better one the more you play the game

by the way did you not know that there is a faq which answers all of this or do you just not care that people took the time to answer the questions before and you want people to answer them again

If you're only getting one then I would have to say start on 6th style.

If you don't play the early mixes first you won't ever be able to enjoy them ever, I've seen that a ton of times and it really upsets me because the older mixes are amazing.

Also the Tatsujin videos on 6th really helped motivate me and push me along when I was starting.
