Or point me to a thread about them, that works too.

(Pinnacle - highest skill level)
10th Dan
9th Dan
8th Dan
7th Dan
6th Dan
5th Dan
4th Dan
3rd Dan
2nd Dan
1st Dan (entry Dan)
1st Kyu
2nd Kyu
3rd Kyu
4th Kyu
5th Kyu
6th Kyu
7th Kyu
(Beginner - lowest skill level)
basically it's a flavor feature to gauge the "class" that you're in based on your skill level, which is determined by which class you can clear. A class refers to a kyu or a dan.
The easiest songs are in 7th Kyu, followed by a slight difficulty increment in 6th Kyu, then 5th Kyu, all the way to 1st Kyu, after which one's class enters "Dan". Songs on 1st Dan are less technical and difficult than 2nd, followed by 3rd, etc. Usually after 8th Dan(aka 9th and 10th Dan), the increment in difficulty takes another steep leap.
When you first enter class mode, classes 7th Kyu to 1st Dan are available. Clearing each Dan class unlocks 2 classes after the cleared Dan. (i.e. clear 1st Dan, unlock 2nd and 3rd Dan for selection. Clear 2nd Dan, 3rd Dan is already unlocked so you'll unlock 4th Dan for selection. Clear 4th Dan, unlock 5th and 6th Dan for selection etc) This pattern ends at 7th Dan. Only by clearing 8th Dan can you unlock 9th Dan, and only by clearing 9th Dan can you unlock 10th Dan.
10th Dan is nigh impossible for the likes of me though (;_; )
I actually stooped the low and attempted a double play 10th Dan with two players (a friend and I) and we couldn't clear it. (T___T) *cries at corner*

Therefore, any form of random, mirror is not allowed as well as easy mode, 5-key and Auto Scratch. This forces all players to play the same stages and create a standard by which to judge all players equally.
In Expert courses you are free to use easy and random to allow for the highest score possible.

I'm just curious because being part of such a dedicated bemani community makes me feel like i'm the worst IIDX player ever . I bet many other players feel the same thing. I think I'm 6th~7th Dan rated...

Import console players aren't really representative of the "average" player. Anybody who frequents Japanese arcades could tell you how good the real "average" player is. (Hint: not very.)

I saw some dude doing The Safari[7k] and passing it with one hand. Since Cardinal Gate wasn't unlocked I got to see a lot of people AA-AAAing a bunch of anothers. <_<

For the most part I played in and around the Yokohama area. There were a lot of good players, the regulars if you will, but every other person playing picked DoLL Hyper with Auto Scratch and Easy on. I've seen people Hard clear Mei Another and Scorpion Fire Another, but I've seen far more people fail songs on Beginner and Normal. Quote: |

I remember back when a lot of regulars on this board, myself included, couldn't pass The Safari, now the majority of us can. Everyone was where you are at one point, just stick with it.

In my opinion they are all cult games for the most part and when I was in Japan(Okinawa and a bit in tokyo) I saw mostly pros plays. I was surprised to see almost noone play singles on a IIDX machine(only saw two I think >_>). Almost all of the bemani were occupied by at least decent players but i'm sure like here ther are beginners that pass by if they aren't scared off.
Was the class mode unlocks that were stated above(the unlcok of two new ones as you move up) only released in some games? I have 7th and 8th style and I've always remebered 7th kyu to 10 dan being available from start. I think I fit ok somewhere between 5-6, possibly 7. Can't remember.

Total Tokens: 4,041.41 Donate Tokens | I lived in Japan for 4 months and most people who played any Bemani game sucked. I'm talking 4-5 on IIDX, 20-25 on Pop'n Music, 5-6 on DDR, and... 30 on GF/DM, which is by far the most popular Bemani game in Japan. No contest.
The reason you guys see mostly pro players, I think, is because you're in popular tourist areas in huge cities where the only people who go are really elite people or Japanese people who need to play Bemani every day.
