Ok, I've been playing for almost a year now and got curious about the game difficulty option (never been bothered to change it from 3 - normal). Sticking it down to 1, i was pretty surprised at how a whole difficulty wall pretty much came down instantly. So the question: is it frowned upon to play on an easier setting?
Pretty much, yes. Putting the game on 1, is like always having Easy mode on while playing. If you've had it at 3 for this long, I wouldn't bother changing it. You should keep it at 3.

Agreed.
If anything, you should put it higher (to make it harder), so that switching back to 3 will make everything seem easier.
I thought 4 was default? Or is that only for AC.. Our Troopers AC is on 5 :/
Thankfully, you haven't experienced playing at MK 88 in Mongkok, Kowloon in Hong Kong where the machine difficulty is set to Level 6/Hard. For first timers, it may indeed serve as a shock due to the difficulty bump (I failed Madrugada [a] first time I played there )
It really sucks yet then again, the machine is 100% brand new (with the LCD screen and all) plus it has e-amusement online connection. So that kinda offsets it........a bit.

Our machine was set at 6 for two months when we first got it.. I then convinced the tech to turn it down to 4.. which lasted for about a week. For some reason, they just wouldn't leave it and settled on level 5 :/

Makes more money when it's harder. People fail more.
Generally yeah. The establishments seem to go after turnover (for faster Return of Investment). Though this only works if there is no other alternative machine. Otherwise, if there is, then players would go to a machine that has easier game difficulty (since they are the same game version).......unless there are factors that even out or something.
Ver2 set the IIDX machine at SVGL to life7 one time. It was hilarious.
If you're someone who uses Hard mode for almost every song, the life setting wouldn't matter so much, but for beginners, it's going to kick their asses around.
