Marketplace Rating: 0 | Help on Improving This might be a stupid thread, but...
I just started playing beatmania IIDX this summer
I am currently playing level 5s and 6s, mostly with Cs
I can Full Combo most level 2 songs, and almost full combo level 3s,
All with Highspeed 0.5 (or faster), and Sudden+ set to 150 (on DistorteD)
I just realized, though, is that the reason I get C and D grades is because I score half of the total notes in Just Greats, and the rest in Goods.
I have 3 Questions
1. Is it possible to hit less Goods? And if so, how? I have tried, but the outcome is always the same. I just have problems with timing.
2. On Faster songs (and Ganymede) there are a lot of notes that are right next to each other, and many notes that are 3+ notes together in a weird pattern. What is the best way to play these?
3. How do you play IIDX? I play using both hands on the keys, left hand mostly hitting...white keys 1 and 3, and the 1st black key, and my right hand hitting the rest, and pinky to scratch.
Sorry if my questions are | |

Marketplace Rating: 2 | Play more. At your level it's hard to give any concrete advice. I guess the one thing you need to work on when starting 6s is learn how to do 16th note streams, which can be done by knowing where all the keys are.
1. Timing is tricky, and sometimes varies version to version. Try to have your eyes at the same level as the red line. Also, tap the keys. Listening to your own key taps will help you time.
2. Find a finger combination that feels comfortable to you. There is no right way to hit 3+ note combinations. Just don't get your fingers all twisted up so that you can hit the incoming notes.
3. See 1st part of 2. | |

Play how you feel comfortable, and practice.

Marketplace Rating: 5 | Yeah, some people may improve faster than other people, but you can't just play IIDX and instantly be good at it :p

You won't be able to get this overnight.
Plus, some people will always excel faster than others (see people like Exagon in the amateur thread who has now been clearing lvl 11 songs in a matter of three months or less...........but he's already had experience with piano so I'm not sure if it qualifies).
Anyway, the keyword is practice.
Plus, if you're playing two-handed, you might wanna use random so you can get used to other patterns that you won't normally expect. This also helps in your fingering as well as your reactions to note patterns that are unfamiliar to you.
Granted, I suggest that if you go for random, don't activate the HARD mode just yet. Only do so once you feel that you are versed enough to do it with less misses and stuff.
Hope that helps

Later on when you get better and you start to do complicated charts use random on songs 1 or 2 levels below the song you're doing. It really helped me get past songs like Blind Justice [a] and Lovely Storm [a]. Most of the time it doesn't seem like you're getting better but just play some more and you'll notice a difference after a while. | |

Marketplace Rating: 0 | Some say that playing harder songs helps improve your timing indirectly (and vice-versa).
I guess for someone like me (who doesn't care so much about scoring...........other than for accessing extra stage and getting more GOLI pics on the arcade version), this statement does apply for me.
Heh I probably couldn't give a rats ass if only have less than 10 songs that I've AAAed in my life. In fact, even in the arcade, I still unfortunately haven't AAAed any song on even the easiest difficulty (closest I came to was Honey Punch [h] at 182k which is just an AA). Heck, the only reason I'd AAA a song is because I just want to see DJ Hifumi and the pic of it live on the screen of the arcade machine itself.
-------------------------
So anyway:
I'm actually more of a person who wants to pass/clear songs with HARD mode on (as much as possible) and that's the short term. Medium term goal is when I start hard clearing some level 12 songs and that my long-term goal is to be able to FC/PC as many songs as I can.
Oh and that's one important thing that anyone new to BM IIDX must remember: Set goals for yourself and believe that you can accomplish these.
A little boost of self-confidence can go along way.

A little boost of self-confidence can go along way. | Completely agree with this. I'm not usually one for positive thinking, but it does help. If you go into a song thinking "this song is fucked, I'll never pass it", you probably never will. :S | |

By that I mean, I won't just stick to playing 10s all day and keep on trying to improve those scores. I'll force myself to fail the 12s, maybe see if I can improve those scores by a few points (usually I can improve them by a lot because I don't play them that often), and then I dip back down to say 11s, 10s or 9s and they seem easier in comparison.
I also find that I tend to get bored just playing regular free mode, so lately I've been going through making sure that all the backside expert courses are unlocked, and those can be very fun. Daninintei is great too, just to check up on your progress. Since I have access to styles 9th through GOLD I guess it's easier for me because if I'm tired of one style I can easily switch to another that I haven't played in a while.
I think a good indicator that you're improving (apart from EX score changes of course) is where your comfortable scroll rate is. Since I changed my playing style to take 3 with my right thumb I've had to lower it because it was too fast and I couldn't react to scratch-3 fast enough. So I dropped my reading from 560-580 to ~500. As I get used to my new play style, I find myself needing faster and faster speeds, and it corresponds to my increasing comfort with the style (as well as improved scores of course). I'm not one to condone increasing your scroll rate for the sake of increasing your scroll rate alone, but I find that it can help indicate improvement in reading skills as well as timing. | |

Later on as you get more advanced, you can adjust the sudden plus and the hi speed to get a quasi constant scroll rate for most songs, which should help your consistency in getting flashing greats.
I noticed that practice as much as you can helps but don't overdo your practicing. I typically play maybe 5 or 6 games every time, 3 to 4 times a week and I can see an improvement somewhat everytime. If I played more, I don't think i would improve as much.
