Default HS usage

I've been thinking about my HS usage and how I can try and use certain HS settings for certain BPM's. I noticed after watching a bunch of youtube videos that most everyone on there uses higher HS settings.

But of course, there's Lisu. He uses no HS settings. Is that a bad habit to get into, trying to learn to play with NO speed mods?

I mean, I can play using HS settings, it just feels like sometimes it'd be nice to play WITHOUT modding the hell out of the song. I dunno.

What are some of everyone else's thoughts? Is it even worth attempting to no HS it (if it IS a possibility, how on earth to start to learn that???)? Thanks for the opinions here!

Oh it's possible. It's not common, but it's very possible.

Before IIDX, during my 5-key days, I never used a speed mod. Some people don't in order to illicit an extra level of challenge. Myself - I just learned to play that way. :P

Playing songs without a speed mod can be done. It just requires an insane amount of concentration, and in some cases, a general knowledge of note placement. However, make no mistake, it takes alot of practice - especially on the harder songs.

Would it be easier to learn no speed after I'm better at the game with speed? I'm not that good yet - only able to do 5's or so on Hyper.

Trying to play with no speed mods won't hurt you in the long run, though you'll probably hit a wall and give up. LISU plays (or played) with HS mods; for the 6th Style videos he did a fair amount of memorization. Once you get to more complicated songs, you're basically stuck with three options:

-Be Autoplay
-Memorize the notes and use visual cues to jog your memory
-Use HS mods

HS mods don't have the same stigma attached to them in other Bemani games as in DDR, so never be shy to use them.

I use HS'es when needed. I only use about a 0.5 to 2.0 at the most. Yeah, songs that are more compmlicated are just easier if you memorize them. Go into Training mode and play them slower and when you get the hang of it, you'll see it's not that hard to play those songs.

I started playing using HS mods and still do, but it just seems like it would be fun to do without them. I play on Hard Random all the time, so I couldn't really memorize the song per se.

All these tidbits are really helpful though - I appreciate it. We'll see where my IIDX'ing takes me!

I caught myself yesterday doing something I could never pass earlier. I started doing Moon_child on 4.0. (160 BPM). Then all of a sudden I was reading the majority of it, without real difficulty. When I finished, I realized I was on 5.0

Good lord.

P.S. 12th style on Hyper

i always end up using HS 3-3.5 for 130 to 170 bpm, and HS 2 for 180-220. those seem to be a good medium for everything played to easily read it. (normal people see me play with these settings and say "OMG how can you read THAT!")

just tried without speed mods... damn how did i used to play like that. i can only keep going in areas where the beat is in-your-face obvious.

that's a big range you got goin there for HS 3-3.5

I myself can never see myself not using HS modifiers. The notes are too clustered and unreadable for me. Currently I'm trying to speedup my reading, like recently I bumped a BPM 160 from 3.5 to 4.

Here's my settings:

Anything below 150: HS 5.0
151-160: HS 4.5
161-170: HS 4.0
171-180: HS 3.5

etc.

On certain songs though, I pull down the HS and add sudden+, helps a lot with chord streams. Otherwise I really never use sudden.

Find a good medium with HS and towel/sudden+ is the best way to go imo. HS is 100% necessary for me. I can't play anything with low speeds. And yeah, there are good players that play no speeds.
e.g.
YouTube - innocent walls [a] dj shorne hi speed 0
YouTube - dj shorne go berserk [a] no hi speed

That reminds me. There's this video of this guy playing ganymede (BPM like 70-80 range) without HS or sudden and passing it.

YouTube - IIDX 13 DistorteD : Autumn plays Ganymede another HI-Speed 0

Anyone know if he's simply looking at the other person's screen? If this guy (he's Japanese) is known like LISU to do stuff like this, then he's for real, but how hard is it to play P2 while looking at P1?

I think looking at the other screen would be a lot easier than looking at his own, haha.

Right now I play at High Speed 5 On 140-150BPM songs, and going down by .5 every 10 to 5 BPM. But don';t try to push yourself all the time, always keep it on the highest possible HS setting when in TRAINING MODE, in FREE MODE, I suggest trying to push the HS setting on easier to hard songs, and try slowing it down to a comfortable notch when trying to beat a new song or sight reading.

Always, always stray from that comfort zone. That's in everything, not just HS. It'll only make your comfort zone stronger for when you actually need it.

My advice is to start with a song that really benefits from it, i.e. something slow. Dune, Be In My Paradise, Ballad For You, Sayonara Heaven, Love Box, Really Love, something like that. Preferably one you've been struggling with or have had trouble reading. The best way to understand the benefits of HS is to see them, loud and clear. If it's something that you're pretty sure you're good enough to clear but have always come up a bit short, that's even better. (It was Buffalo for me, BTW.)

Then work your way from there. Increasing the spacing definitely makes reading the notes easier, but you have to weigh that against having less time to react. If you'll look at my VJ Army scores, you'll see that most of my speeds are on the low side. That's because I have trouble dealing with lots of little objects whizzing down the screen. Nothing right or wrong about that, that's just how I am. YMMV. Find what works for you.

Oh, and work out your ideal HS for every song. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this. Different songs have different notes, patterns, quirks, etc., and something that's perfect for one 150 BPM-er may be a snail's crawl for another.

And don't worry, there's no "stigma" or whatever crap. That's one DDR song, Bag. Absolutely nothing else. Hell, you hardly even hear any noise over Random. If you need it, use it.

(P.S. For crying out loud, don't judge yourself by Lisu. That dude is insane. )
