Default I only have BMUS...

And it sucks.
The songlist sucks.
The ratings are dumbed down.
etc.

Should I "start" with GOLD (when it comes out), or get one of the earlier PS2 iterations?

Are you comfortable, skill-wise, to move to a JPN release of IIDX? Because I felt the same exact way that your feeling and I made the stupid mistake of jumping from BMUS to 10th style, which is still a fairly challenging style for me. But, if you really want to, try HAPPY SKY. I've been hearing from many people that this is one of the better balanced out IIDX releases.

i was in the same situation as you, but i cheaped out and used simulators instead. Unless you're really broke, its probably better to buy CS styles.

i was in the same situation as you man, and i have to say getting a pre-modded slim ps2 is the best decision i ever made. mainly for iidx, but it opens the door to alot of great games that the us will never see, and i managed to get 3rd style -> 13th style all on ps2 and the very first beatmania released for psone. get a premodded ps2 slim and get your iidx games, i don tknow your skill level but happy sky is probably the best if your beginner-normal and maybe 10th, stay away from red for a little bit ! have fun !

I did the same thing as Mikeymike and made the jump from BMUS to 10th Style, and it a difficult to get used to since BMUS is SOOO easy and the timings are a joke compared to the CS versions. If you wanted to start on the CS versions, I'd recommend either Happy Sky or Distorted. RED is ok, but in terms of the song structure, HS and DD have easier note pattern songs.

As balanced as the notecharts have gotten in recent styles, I will stick to my opinion, however biased it may be, that 6th style is the way to go for beginners. Old interface, yes, but 6th style had drill mode, which I feel is the best possible introduction to the series. It will get you used to many common patterns and play-styles in the game, and it will make the jump to some levels a lot easier. It also had some of the better licenses.

I should also add, read the FAQ posted in this forum before you post anymore questions like this. You will find a lot of information in it.

I think that DD is extremely easy considering that I have like 100 more DJ Points compared to HS and almost 200 more than compared to RED. It took me forever to clear gigadelic on Normal, but when I got DD I was finally able to clear stoic on normal and most of my song scores were at least a whole letter grade higher than on songs on similar difficulties on previous styles. Either they lowered the difficulty on the game itself, or the songs are getting easier on average, I really don't know.

I think it comes down to skill set. In my case, stoic [N] feels harder overall, but I'm stronger against stoic than against gigadelic [N] whose hardest part is the ending... which is the only tough part of the song, IMO. Songs on the same level have different formations, which do matter when trying to clear them.

I don't think songs are getting easier necessarily, since I can clear all the 9s in Happy Sky, but not in DD (grrr Apocalypse [H])... but maybe it's dependent on the player.

And if you want a BMUS transitioning story... I went from BMUS to 9th Style at BMUS 5-star level and could handle some of the L7 songs.

I waited to go from BMUS to JP IIDX CS when all but the 10s were beaten.

After that I was beating 9's and 10's on happy sky with no problem. 11's were raping me in the ass however.

If you don't wanna be spoiled by the neat little features of the new styles go for like 8th style or earlier. The songs are stupendously easy even on the [A] charts, and there have been numerous songs in those previous styles that have never been revived in another CS release.

If you don't go that route get Happy Sky. HS is so much fun.

You should consider yourself lucky to have ANY CS styles available to you. In my city all we have is 10th Style and HS in the arcade. 10th style is a whole 40 minutes away...so quit your whining.
