I started with 10th style, and I can already tell the learning curve is much more difficult then the U.S. copy.
If you have the hang of the U.S. copy, you should have no problem moving to a Japanese release... unless you are still on beginner mode. | |

happy sky in my opinion is great for beginners, it's beginner mode is really easy as well. I started at happy sky, moved to 10th style, then to distorted, and now i'm playing red. i cant wait for gold  | |

I wouldn't start with Gold, the difficulties are all screwed up. The lower difficulties are way hard for their ratings and the upper difficulties are way low. Don't get me wrong, Gold is probably my new favorite style, just not what I'd consider beginner friendly.
I made most of my progress early on with 6th and 7th, with 5th close behind.
