You must also remember that getting new kits from Konami for an American arcade is really hard, since Konami will blacklist distributors that are sending said kits outside of Japan.
There are usually a flood of previous styles on yahoo japan right after a new one is released. I'm sure that if somehow you have a machine with 9th Style that you can find a Happy Sky kit somewhere or something.

I'm guessing GOLD is going to be run on a resolution higher than 640x480, so no, no PS2. Perhaps just a nicer PC?

Total Tokens: 454,238.28 Donate Tokens | Here's a quick reference:
IIDX 1st - 8th (Twinkle platform a.k.a. the legacy hardware), anything within this range can simply be upgraded with a new HDD, security cart, and IIRC and game CD and BGA DVD.
IIDX 9th or higher (Bemani PC platform), in order to make the leap from Twinkle, a main board upgrade is required, and then from there on, upgrades can be accomplished the same way as with Twinkle, with a new HDD, security cart, game discs.
I'm not sure about GOLD's upgrade status. Once we get word from Japan when it comes out, we'll know, but right now, I'm taking the whole hardware upgrade from Bemani PC with a grain of salt, since the platform itself is almost four years old.

I'm not exactly sure how it would cut down on piracy since I don't think I've ever seen a pirated beatmania IIDX kit before.

Total Tokens: 208,492.40 Donate Tokens | A Twinkle hardware information page can be found at http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=827.
Bemani PC-Based hardware information page is at: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=830.
A PS2-based hardware configuration was used for:
DDR/DS Supernova
DS Fusion
Gitadora V
Gitadora V2
Info here: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=831
However, I don't think that they would use a PS2-based hardware system for IIDX. Call it a hunch, but something tells me they are going to use GOLD to launch a new hardware system.
