9th and above run on the PC hardware, so yes they can be upgraded. The older hardware can only be upgraded to 8th.

7th cannot go past 8th style without a hardware upgrade. Anything from 9th Style forward can be upgraded to DistorteD. No news yet about Gold.

You must also remember that getting new kits from Konami for an American arcade is really hard, since Konami will blacklist distributors that are sending said kits outside of Japan.

There are usually a flood of previous styles on yahoo japan right after a new one is released. I'm sure that if somehow you have a machine with 9th Style that you can find a Happy Sky kit somewhere or something.

According to Andy of Tokyo Game Action, a hardware upgrade is required to upgrade a IIDX machine from DistorteD to GOLD.

Is it going to end up running on the PS2 hardware or what?

I would sure hope not. That would be a huge step down from what it's running on now.

How would that be? The PS2 versions look pretty arcade-perfect to me. Its not like IIDX pushes the graphical envelope in terms of horsepower anyway.

Yeah, but the PC hardware it runs on is still superior to PS2 hardware. PS2 games cannot load from a hard drive well either, I don't think. Also, given how expensive the GOLD upgrade is, I would sure as hell hope that's something nicer than PS2 hardware.

I'm guessing GOLD is going to be run on a resolution higher than 640x480, so no, no PS2. Perhaps just a nicer PC?

PS2 hardware loads off of the HDD fine. DDR SN and GFdm haven't had issues. I've seen songs load slightly faster on GFdm V faster than some songs on IIDX if anything.

If anything, the switch to Windows caused timing issues. The PS2 platform actually seems to be stable enough.

That and it would crack down on piracy, which is why I think Konami is switching to the new board in the first place.

Here's a quick reference:

IIDX 1st - 8th (Twinkle platform a.k.a. the legacy hardware), anything within this range can simply be upgraded with a new HDD, security cart, and IIRC and game CD and BGA DVD.

IIDX 9th or higher (Bemani PC platform), in order to make the leap from Twinkle, a main board upgrade is required, and then from there on, upgrades can be accomplished the same way as with Twinkle, with a new HDD, security cart, game discs.

I'm not sure about GOLD's upgrade status. Once we get word from Japan when it comes out, we'll know, but right now, I'm taking the whole hardware upgrade from Bemani PC with a grain of salt, since the platform itself is almost four years old.

I think another reason why beatmania IIDX jumped onto a PC based hardware system was to help facilitate the whole e-amuse thing. Windows XP would make the whole internet connectivity thing a lot easier to work with.

I'm not exactly sure how it would cut down on piracy since I don't think I've ever seen a pirated beatmania IIDX kit before.

A Twinkle hardware information page can be found at http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=827.
Bemani PC-Based hardware information page is at:
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=830.

A PS2-based hardware configuration was used for:
DDR/DS Supernova
DS Fusion
Gitadora V
Gitadora V2
Info here: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=831

However, I don't think that they would use a PS2-based hardware system for IIDX. Call it a hunch, but something tells me they are going to use GOLD to launch a new hardware system.
