Default JP Beatmania on US PS2...

Sorry, I know this question has probably been asked a bajillion times before, but...

How would I go about playing the JP Beatmania games on a USA PS2? The US Beatmania is slowly driving me insane. I don't want to open my PS2 and use a modchip, if that's possible.

Could someone point me to a guide or something...?

Also, are there any mixes that you guys would recommend? The only songs I'm really looking for are RED ZONE and Xepher, to name a couple.

Aside from Swap Magic, there is no legal method (or a method we can discuss on the forum) that doesn't require opening the ps2.

I would wait for EMPRESS CS to come out in a few months cause both songs will be included.

But if you're impatient then Happy Sky is the only one that has Xepher and IIDX RED and DistorteD both have RED ZONE.

I would def recommend getting iidx 3rd style. Its got r3 AND holic. Oh and .59 as well.

Plus you can give 22dunk some funky lovin. It be lovin paradise up in here!!

Edit: Oh I forgot to say RED ZONE and Xepher aren't in any beatmania games.

Technically, Swapmagic would involve opening and exchanging the top of your PS2 case if it's a PHAT model. The slims involve placing a few metal bits over parts in the PS2 drive, but not actually opening the case.

Swapmagics are rather cheap, as well ($30-40), so they're the most recommended non-modchip method around.

Personally I'm a big fan of 7th Style, IIDX RED, and DistorteD for their overall songlist quality. Pick one or 2 mixes and wait for the 2-disc EMPRESS+PREMIUM BEST release, which has over 180 songs listed for it already.

Yeah, I think I'll just wait for Empress to come out, so I can get the most bang for my buck :P

I meant IIDX, too. When I say "Beatmania" I don't mean JUST the old Beatmania :P

Yeah, I've got an oooolllddd PS2, got it a year or so after PS2 was released. I did watch a video one time of someone using that kind of PS2, and it looked like he put in the disc, then manually pulled the disc drive back out.

You don't need to open the top, you just need to take the front of the disc tray off and use Swap Magic with a slide tool. Japanvideogames.com sells swap magic discs with slide tools for 25 bucks.

Slide cards are a bad idea, they're not good for your drive at all

If you'd have read any of the other posts in this topic, you'd have discovered (quite possibly through the use of magic or sorcery) that the best method to play Japanese games on your American PS2 without modding it is to use a flip top cover.

Ahh, I see...

Are the new "Slim" PS2's any easier to mod? I might consider getting one of those, seeing as the PS2 I currently own isn't really mine, and if I screw something up...yeah. xP

I looked on Play-Asia and every single JP PS2 was sold out, except for a couple, which were $169 and $199...not willing to buy a brand-new system for that much, just for a couple games. I'd rather just use a Swap Magic for 40 to 50 bucks ;p
