Just a question about Beatmania Characters.

I often hear about Beatmania characters but when I see screenshots of the gameplay I never really see characters. I've never played Beatmania before so I dont know much about it. Are there selectable characters in the game or do they just appear sometimes in the videos?

They just appear in the videos from time to time and in artwork.
