even though it's fixed, for future reference, if you can run game backups, the best thing to do is make a copy of your game and just run the copy instead of the original. that way, if your copy stops working, you can just throw it out and make another copy from the undamaged original.
That or run it through a resurfacing widget. I know my copy of FF Tactics kept freezing until I got the disc resurfaced - then it ran (and still runs) like a charm.
