It'll teach you the mechanics of the game and allow you to start building muscle memory and technique and whatnot, but make sure you're aware that the grading scale in bmus is much more lenient than in the japanese games. Otherwise you'll feel like you took a huge step backwards moving to japanese mixes and have no idea why.
Aside from that you really shouldn't have any problems. The health bar in bmus seems to be about the same as usual so you won't be in for any weird surprises there.
Bmus isn't really terrible, it just has a very limited song selection. However, they selected some really good songs, and provided a very nice difficulty spread for beginning players. If you find yourself getting really stuck at some point with it, but are still interested in learning the game, I would recommend picking up a japanese mix or two. (personally I got the most out of 6th and 7th when I was starting out)
I say this because my friend was stuck around 6s for a long time, and was having trouble motivating himself to keep going. Just in the past couple weeks I brought all my games up to his place and let him play whatever he wanted, giving him access to a few hundred new songs. In the past week or two he's managed to pass his first couple of 8s. He's more excited about playing 2dx than ever, and is consistently improving now.
But yeah, to summarize, BMUS will do the job starting you out and has good songs on it. If you start to get frustrated with it/ feel your progress is tapering off, considering picking up a couple japanese mixes.
